“Lovely room, wonderful hosts, wonderful quiet location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

Loved my stay at Alexander house. The home is lovely. The hosts are wonderful, and they have lived in Ottawa for many years, so they can recommended places to visit. My trip was a combination pleasure and work. It was nice to come home to a large room with space to relax. Breakfast was very good every morning. They easily cater to special dietary needs. The B and B is on a quiet street near many of the embassies. We are just around the corner from Cordon Bleu Signature restarant, if you want to spoil yourself. A 20 minute walk to the Bay Ward Market, or a very short drive. Nice to be so close but not to have the noise of the market itself.

“Beautiful house, unique character, great breakfasts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2009

A beautiful, classic (but well-maintained) house located close to downtown, but off the busy thoroughfares. The room was clean and comfortable, and breakfasts were superb - nice way to start the day after long flights (and conference talks). The proprieters were very friendly. I'd highly recommend it.

“Gracious stay at beautful and comfortable Art and Crafts house in Ottawa”

My work makes it necessary to travel extensively to different countries and as such I stay at appropriate large hotels . These all have the usual comforts but are generally only differentiated by location. All services are similar as is décor etc. So when I had to travel to Ottawa recently , I decided , on the advice of a friend, to stay at a B&B called Alexander House. It was conveniently located and close to the centre of the city .

My only previous experience with B&B s had been in England many years ago while cycling around Britain. The smell of mould and bacon still lurks in the back of my mind , So it was with some trepidation and a little frisson that I arrived. Well things have changed !

I was welcomed into a charming and well maintained Art Deco ( more American Arts and Crafts ) building by Sandra, the charming and courteous owner. I was taken to my room which was large, comfortable and filled with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel. I was given advice on good restaurants, ( as it turned out not only good but reasonably priced ) and spent a pleasant evening before returning to my “home”.

The bed seemed at first to be too soft , as I am used to sleeping as close as possible to an army cot, but I immediately fell asleep and felt as if I was floating. The next morning, thouroughly refreshed I was greeted with a sumptuous breakfast which featured piles of fresh fruit and a variety of bread types to suit all - some without wheat for those suffering allergies. Of course eggs any style you want , clearly fresh and prepared by Sandra herself. The quality was such that it is obvious that she is an excellent cook .

All in a magnificent setting of Chippendale style chairs, antique furniture and paintings which reflect the owners impeccable taste.

I do not normally write about places that I stay at , but the quality of the accommodation and the gracious and caring attitude of the owner was such that I felt it necessary to write to you.

“We had a wonderful time in Ottawa at Alexander House”

Ottawa is an historic Canadian city. To see the sights...Parliament House, Art Museum, War Museum, Museum of Civilization, the Alexander House is a prime location. Situated on a quiet street minutes by bus, car or even foot from downtown, Alexander House is a well-appointed comfortable "antique." Large rooms with cozy comforters look out over mature trees festooned with birds and a few squirrels. The breakfast is sumptuous...fresh yogurt, granola, eggs, pancakes, orange juice, bacon in a private dining nook. Sandra and Steven Hartmann are wonderful hosts. They are helpful and accommodating. They had brochures available and answered all questions we had about the city. We have stayed with them four times and will continue to return. Value for the money is excellent.

“a great Bad and Breakfast, charming rooms, very well located and awesome breakfasts !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2009

This bed and breakfast is very well located from dowton (Byward market, Parlement ...) The rooms are so charming and very well decorated. You will find some teas or tisanes and some reviews.
Sandra is a great cooker and she prepared amazing breakfasts for us. She will take care of your well being and will give advice to visit Ottawa (maps, suggestions according to your tastes...)
I recomand this B&B if you want to relax, to visit Ottawa, to forgot your car during a while and to meet Sandra and Stephen.
