“Lovely Boutique Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

In reading the other reviews, you can see the place isn't perfect. During my stay, the room definitely could have been tidier. However, that aside, I would stay again in a heartbeat. It was a short distance from everything (Downtown, Elgin, Bank, The Glebe, Chinatown etc) and was cozy and quiet, especially when compared to major chain hotels. I'd recommend this place any day over the Best Western, Delta or Travelodge. Mind you, the rooms are only designed for two people (usually boutique hotels are).

Room Tip: Stay in a room that overlooks MacLaren Street. You'll have a nice juliet balcony and you'll...

“Not impressed, what's all that NOISE!?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

My mum and I stayed here for the weekend of the September 2011 Ottawa Army Run.
I booked the hotel because it looked rather nice and I wanted to treat my mum for being so nice and tagging along to cheer me on.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the treat I thought it would be.
We walked into a room that was cramped and dark.
We arrived early so my mum watched the TV and I got onto the internet..... wait.... what internet?? The "free" wifi is a joke. It doesn't work. I can't imagine staying here on business with the spotty internet connection. During the whole stay I never managed to get a connection for more than 1 minute.
We headed out for dinner and when we got back we decided to hit the hay early since I had to run in the morning.
Unfortunately, I didn't get much sleep. We were rather high up in the building, but the noise below was very loud. I think there was a party going on.
The worst was the noise coming from the walls. We heard EVERYTHING people were doing in the rooms beside us. Doors banging, slamming. AWFUL.
And then I kept hearing little scratches in the walls. I have no idea what it was but it was driving me insane.
Needless to say, it was not a nice night's sleep.
I went to run the next morning, beautiful weather, but it was a tough run, I was excited to get back to shower and head home. Check-out was at noon, so I planned to just jump in the shower and head out. My mum had already packed everything up for us. We arrived to the room (my mom met me at the finish line) and our key card did not work. We were locked out of our room as we arrived at the door at 12:01. My mother was furious. I was damp, beginning to shiver and wanting a nice hot shower to refresh myself after the race. Because I was sore, I waited by the room and she headed downstairs to ask about this lock-out. The front desk person was rude to her, condescending and told her that past noon meant an extra fee. She raised a bit of hell saying that all we wanted to do was grab our stuff in the room and leave. Which is what we ended up doing. I was FURIOUS. We grabbed our things, I changed into dry clothes and left without a shower.
Thanks very much.
Your lock-out policy is absolutely ridiculous. I have never had this at any other hotel, and most hotels have allowed me to get back to my room to shower after a race, considering most of your business that weekend is from racers. Or, if the check-out is strict, hotels let runners shower in the gym showers.
Will not go back.
I travel to Ottawa several times a year.
This one is now off my list.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room, I assume it would be a tad bit quieter.

“much better places to choose from!”

stayed here for 3 nights in October on business in Ottawa...not sure why its rated as the best business hotel in Ottawa in the Frommer's guide???....trying to work on a laptop in these small dimly let rooms is depressing! The rooms are outdated, tired dark, and depressing with lots of brown carpet. THe bathroom is very small- i practically had to climb on top of the toilet to open the bathroom door to get out! There is a tiny kitchenette, but mine had crumbs of food on the stovetop and couner so I wondered how well they were cleaned. I had a room with an ajoining door and could hear every word of the neihgbours were saying each morning. I wouldn't consider the outside of the hotel or lobby to be inviting. There is scarse lighting outside the hotel and was concerned about safety. I foudn it hard to find in the dark when I was driving there becuase there is hardly any lighting outside. For the same price you could stay at a much nicer hotel like the Arc, Indigo, or Novotel, all of which I have stayed at and are also downtown, conveneint hotels. I wouldn't stay at this hotel again with so many other options in the downtown area.

Room Tip: don't get one with an ajoining door

“Old, dirty and with rude service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

I went to a business trip back in April, and everything from Check in to Check out was bad; The day I checked in I was really tired because I had to take 3 connecting flights and had been traveling all day long, and when I get to the Hotel's front desk... Surprise no one was there! I looked for a bell or something to announce that I was there but there was nothing, so I had to use my voice as the only instrument available, then a really rude girl appeared, check in was really impleasant and the girl at the front desk not professional at all, after she gave me the card to get into my room I remained in the front desk waiting for the bell boy, but surprise, the bell boy never appeared and the front desk girl only said "It is on the fifth floor" while pointing to the elevator.

Once I got into my room bad surprises continued, the place was not really clean, I took a shower and there was hair in the towels and the floor, some towels were even yellow stained I don't know what those stains were about, when I got to bed there was more hair, on the pillows and blankets, furniture is also really old, the kitchenette specially and the stove also was stained to the point I never got brave enough to cook anything there. Bad experiences collected for 3 weeks I was hosted there, the parking lot is really small and crowded, and has a really bad smell, the cleaning staff even called to my room on a weekend even when there was the "Do not disturb" sign on my door, they said that they were about to end their shift so they would clean my room within half hour, the situation with the dirty towels and hair all along the place never ended (I shave my head so it was for sure not my hair), there was even mucus on the bathroom walls and no one ever cleaned it, also it's located near to a lot of pubs, so at night it get's really noisy and sleep quality is not the best at all, so long story short; I really did not appreciate their service and next time I travel to Ottawa I'll ask my company to give me another hotel, I really don't stand the idea to stay one more night in that place.

Ohhh one more detail... Check out was a nightmare as well, I asked for a cab and when the cab got into the hotel the front desk did not let me know so the cab left and I got late to the airport.

“Average property needing alot of improvements!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011
3
people found this review helpful

The property is in a quiet street in centertown, a few minutes drive from the highway exit. The Hotel does not have a concierge, a bar nor a restaurant. The rooms have been decorated with brown and hearthy tones, thus making them a little dark. The bathrooms are extremely small and difficult to move about once inside. The rooms overlooking the back of the property face the garden of a bar, this is very noisy until at least 2:30 am. The rooms in the front of the property are a little better, but as none of the windows have been sound proofed, your sleep can stil be disturbed by late night noise from people leaving local bars. The complimentary continental breakfast does leave alot to be desired and is cleared away by 9:30 am. There is a car park in the basement of the property, but be warned, the parking spaces are at a premium compared to the inexpensive parking charges in the lot next door.

Room Tip: Please make sure you are givern a room facing the front.
