“has potential but we won't be back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2007

Beautiful old limestone building. Hotel has tons of potential to be a beautiful grand place, but needs maintenance and TLC. The service leaves much to be desired - no one at the front desk when we checked in, tried to raise concerns or when we checked out. When our babysitter tried to call us she couldn't get through to our room as there is not an automatic phone system for the times that the desk is left unattended - often. The doors of the hotel are locked at 2am and are not unlocked until later in the morning...therefore don't expect to go out and get back in again as guests are not given a key to the exterior door. However, we doubt that the fire escape was locked. On the second floor, an air mattress was propped up beneath an emergency exit sign and appeared to be used to block the exit. We liked the wifi internet access, a definite plus in a hotel of this calibre. We wondered if the modem would overload the electrical circuit as it appeared tied into the emergency lights. The staff did appear to try hard for the most part but they do double duty as servers at the pub and spend the majority of their time in the pub. Overall, not impressed and likely won't be back.

  • Liked — Character of the physical building.
  • Disliked — Room was either too hot or too cold - thermostat must not have worked.

“Poor Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2007

The first impression was good. The front desk person was cheerful and helpful. We arrived in our room and the temperature was 59 degrees F, the 1st bad sign. It took a while to figure out the heating (cooling system) but we managed to warm the room up. The room was sparce but relatively clean. The bathroom appeared to be clean with the typical paper around the toilet seat. We noticed mildew in the bath tub and when the paper was removed from the toilet, the seat was attached with one screw and about to fall off. I cannot fathom someone cleaning the bathroom and placing a paper on the seat of the toilet and then adjusting it so that it looks to be attached and not tell someone it is broken! We fouund out later that the people in the next room had mildew in the tub as well.

They have speakers in the hallway that played music during the day... not too bad but they never turned it off and it could be heard all night. Walls are paper thin and if there is anything going on outside the room, you will hear it. 9:00 Sunday morning someone was outside the room vacuuming with what could only be described as one of the loudest vacuum cleaners I have ever heard.

In the morning, there was no water for the shower and no hot waer at all. I had dial 9 for an outside line in order to call the front desk. Several calls were never answered. I left a message but it was never returned.

We left the room and called the hotel later that evening. I explained the situation to the person on the other end of the phone and they asked me to describe the situation as if they had never heard of any problems. I wasn't until I mentioned that I had followed the "plumber" in at 11:00 am that morning that she said "Oh, the kitchen staff left a fan going and turned off the heat so the pipes froze. She was polite and told me that the owner would give me a call.

I have heard nothing fom the Owner. They have my money and I gather could care less. I will not recommend this hotel.

“Worst customer service I've ever experienced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2006

Made a reservation for 4 8 months in advance for a family reunion and traveled 3000 miles to attend. Reservationist said they could accommodate us in the honeymoon suite using two airbeds. When we arrived, they had not reserved the suite. Acknowledged my confirmed reservation for 4 but put us in a room with one double bed and a twin, completely flat air bed and no spares to replace it. We ended up having to inconvenience other relatives by doubleing up in their rooms. The hotel charged us full price for the room and made no compensation for overbooking. When I said I would take my business elsewhere the manager responsed by saying "Good luck, the city is completely sold out". The city of Carleton Place is beautiful!. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. I would advise you not to waist your vacation plans here.

“Charming escape from Ottawa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2005

The Carleton Heritage Inn is in the small town of Carleton Place, but don't pass by and miss the charm of this wonderful gem. The rooms are well-appointed and the quiet atmosphere allows one to truly rest. The restaurant on the main level serves good food not typically found on the Highway 7 circuit from Ottawa to points west. With such reasonable prices, the Carleton Heritage surely merits a visit.
