We are from the UK and were visitng family in Carelton Place and wanted to stay in the centre - the central location is the only good thing going for this hotel.
It took ages to check in as there was no-one on the front desk and we had to scour the building to find someone who could help us. That took some doing as the polite-ish but obviously untrained girls had no idea so we fumbled our way through the check in...same scenario for check out.... We spent four nights there and then a further night two days later and the check in and out experience was bad both times - so it can;t be put down to a one off.
The reception area was tired and astoundingly filthy - the carpet was worn and rucked up and the flooring in the elevatopr had not had a scrub since about 1972.
It was hot (about 28-30 degrees) and so the air con in our room rumbled loudly - unfortunately it could not cope and spat small icicles and dripped all over the floor (and onto our clothes in the wardrobe if we left the doors open), soaking the various towels we put down. There were hairs and dirt in the bathroom, no lid for the WC. Otherwise the room was just about adequate. It would have been more comfortable if the pillows had not been rock hard and covered in a rubber / plastic sleeve.
We frequently stay in budget hotels and we're not especially fussy but this has to rate as one of the worst experiences ever. We had just come from a stay in the Days Inn in downtown Toronto which was about the same price but it was clean, comfortable and had tea/ coffee making in the room - unlike Heritage where you have to trek over the road to Tim Horton's to get a morning cuppa. The place was drab and most of all we had the very strong impression that the owners did not give a stuff. This is an ideal hotel for your worst enemy and I bet the environmental health people would have a cockroach-finding field day. A vile experience I shall never repeat.
