“Quiet and clean, this hotel is a good bargain in west end of Ottawa”

We stayed at the Embassy West Hotel and Seniors Residence for four nights while visiting family in Ottawa over the Christmas holidays. Other than the fact that it felt odd to be staying at a seniors' residence, we were very happy with our stay.

Our room was spacious, clean and newly renovated. We have young children, so it was very convenient to have the kitchenette for snacks and light meals. There was free WiFi, and we were always able to find parking near the front door. Our floor was also quiet, which was a huge plus for us, since most of the other hotels in Ottawa were booked up for the busy holiday season (and an international junior hockey tournament), and may have been quite noisy.

A few suggestions for improvement: The beds could have been a bit firmer. The bedspreads and some of the furnishings and decor looked like they were from the pre-renovation hotel. Not a big deal, but when everything else is brand new, the decor brings it down a bit. The kitchenette is only a fridge, microwave and sink ... a stove is probably out of the question, but a toaster, as well as dinnerware and cutlery for four (rather than two) would have been nice.

Overall it was a good bargain. We booked the promotional rate online via their website, and definitely would not have found anything as clean and new for that price.

“Hotel for senior?”

This is a very 'interesting' hotel with lots of senior living there. Other than my group, I've only seen 1 group of guest with non-seniors. It has doctor and physiotherapist on site. If you want to have breakfast in their dinner room, their priority is to serve the seniors first, so there was a bit of a wait. Basic hotel, but since it's for senior, the hotel is clean. Room has a large closet, kitchenette. Washroom doesn't not have a tub, shower only, but it has a seat, more convenient for senior. We booked a room with 2 Queen size beds, I've never seen a Queen size bed this small, it's definitely a double.

“No frills but great value”

Our group of 4 couples was in town for a week end marriage conference and picked this hotel primarily because of the affordability. I have stayed in other Ottawa hotels many times before and by far this gives the best value. Free parking, helpful staff, clean room with a kitchenette. The bed was firm and comfortable with 2 extra pilows and the bath room was a good size. On the negative side, we were confused if this was the right place because the the sign outside says Senior Living.. We didn't mind the fact that it is partly a retirement home and a hotel, but their website should make this known. This is defintely not the place if you are looking for a romantic get away or a luxurious stay but if all you want is a clean place to get a good's nice rest that won't cost a bundle, this place is perfect.. No breakfast but with the kitchenette, you can make your own coffee. We hope this establishment stays in the hotel business and continues to keep it's prices affordable.

“You get senior living and poor service instead of a hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2011

Don't get fooled by the nice looking pictures on the web site. Search again for "Embassy West Senior Living" and you'll find that this is supposed to be a hotel AND senior living at the same time. The percentage of hotel guests was extremely low, however, and everything is tailored to assisted living. Nothing wrong with having breakfast as one of the only hotel guests, surrounded by seniors in their wheelchairs with a nurse watching over the room. Meeting some colleagues in the "business area" of the hotel while Bingo is going in the same room, repeatedly being addressed by the seniors - didn't expect that from the nice looking web page.
The rooms were clean in fact, but at the same time they were very sterile, with emergency cords next to the bed and toilet. No beverages or even a bottle of water in the room's refrigerator, had to walk to the nearest drug store to get some.
Worst part was the AC not working while the temperature in the room was at an estimated 25°C, just wanted to go to bed after traveling for something like 20 hours. The windows only have very small slots that can be opened and are equipped with mosquito nets, so there is almost no air flow. The front side of the hotel is directly facing Trans Canada Hwy, so you get your share of noise when opening the window.
The front desk guy mentioned that the AC would probably not be turned on, and that management wouldn't allow it at those temperatures. He went to the basement to tell me that the heat was still on and he turned it off now. I couldn't see how this is related to the individual AC units in the rooms not working. Anyway I ended up without working AC that night, luckily it was cold enough to finally get some colder air (+noise) through the window.
Tried to reserve a taxi for the next morning but got rejected by the front desk clerk, stating to "just request it in the morning when you need it, will be here right away". Did that the next morning with another front desk clerk, told us taxi would be there in 5 mins. When asking again after 15 mins, he told us that 15 mins is the minimum expected wait time and we should have booked in advance.
The only positive thing was the wireless internet speed being OK (ca. 500 kbits), probably because I was the only user of the line...

“Close to Civic Hospital, Best deal for long stays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2011

I stayed at Embassy West hotel for two weeks as my mom was recovering from surgery at the Ottawa Civic hospital. I really needed an affordable hotel that was close to the hospital so I could visit my mom daily. This was the best value out of any hotels in Ottawa. The beautifully appointed rooms was great for extended stays because it had a kitchenette which gave me the flexibility to prepare meals in my room if I didn't feel like eating out. Even though their restaurant offers good food. Hands down best deal in Ottawa.
