“Perfect Hotel, Perfect Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

When I was reading the reviews on this hotel prior to staying there, there were many good reviews but also some not so good ones. With bad reviews I always look for common themes in the reviews. The ones that emerged were that it was old/outdated, rude staff (sometimes), water flow problems in the washroom, etc. I can honestly say that I experienced none of this. How anyone can say this hotel is old/outdated is beyond me. From the lobby to the hallways to the room, I found the hotel to be very up to date and pleasant. As for the staff, everyone I met (check-in clerk, cleaning lady, check-out clerk) was very pleasant, polite and nice. As for water flow, it was perfect in our washroom. We booked our stay through Priceline, when we arrived I was told they had us in a room with two 3/4 size beds. I did not even know what a 3/4 was, apparently it is between a twin and a double. When I informed the check-in guy that we were a family of 3 and these beds might be a little tight for us to sleep on, he immediately started to look for a room with either two doubles or two queens. We ended up getting a room with two doubles. The room was very nice and quite big. I believe he actually upgraded us because this room also had a mini kitchenette with microwave, mini fridge, and sink. It also had a balcony. The only knock I can possibly think of regarding this hotel is the location. It is not exactly central to the hotspots of Ottawa (Byward Market, Rideau Canal, Rideau Centre, etc.). It is however not too far from the Parliament buildings, about a 10 min walk. Also, there is not a lot nearby in terms of restaurants or food options (there however is a Tim Horton's nearby). All in all, I have absolutely no complaints about this hotel. We have been to Ottawa many, many times and stayed in various hotels. This was easily up there. This may become our new regular in Ottawa. One thing to note, and this has been mentioned by previous reviewers, this hotel used to be the Delta Hotel and Suites, it changed names as of Feb. 1st 2012. I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If possibly try to get a Studio room, they have kitchenettes ans are quite big. Also, if possible a...

“It's not the Delta”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Made my reservations with the Delta...tried to check in at the Delta...and they sent me down the street to the National. It changed ownership / names between the time I reserved and checked in. It's a very old hotel. Desperately in need of some TLC. Door to my room jammed every time I tried to get in. Wireless didn't work. No desk. Internet connection in a very strange place. Dark shower. Shower took for ever to warm up. Room had a draft and felt cold. Oh yeah...and they charged me $220 instead of the $140 rate I had been given (yes, they did correct it...but what a pain to have to go back).

Room Tip: They gave me a two room suite ...but even that was run down.

“Not a good experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We were told by the res. that we would get a suite but when we arrived we found out that not only it was not a suite it didn't even have wi-fi or a fridge! Come on, what kind a of a 3,5 star hotel does not have these anymore? I am wondering if this happened because we booked through Priceline. So my advice: do not book through Priceline or get a written confirmation about the room in detail at the time of booking.

Room Tip: Insist on an upgrade..

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments through Tripadvisor. The National Hotel and Suites Ottawa is pleased to offer guests one and two-bedroom suites, in addition to studio guestrooms. All studio rooms and suites feature wet-bars with mini-fridges and can be confirmed when booking directly with the hotel. We were sorry to learn you were disappointed with the guestroom booked. When booking through Priceline “Name your Price” some great discounts are offered, unfortunately though room types are not guaranteed. We hope that you will contact us when next planning to return and try one of our suites.

“Name change effective Feb. 1”

The Delta Ottawa Hotel and Suites will be re-branded "The National" effective February 1, 2012. The former Crowne Plaza kitty-corner across the street is under renovation as the Delta Ottawa Centre.

Room Tip: Ask for a West- or North-facing room on the sixth-floor or above.

That is correct! After thirty seven years as part of the Ottawa landscape, first as the independently operated Inn of the Provinces, and later as part of Delta Hotels, on February 1st 2012 we will officially change our name to The National Hotel & Suites Ottawa. Our mission, vision and values of providing a supportive culture to our employees and guests are of utmost importance. The hotel is steeped in tradition and committed to providing you with top notch service and culinary excellence. We can assure you the same high level of service you have come to expect, and the same great people you’ve come to know over the years will remain unchanged. We look forward to welcoming you to The National Hotel & Suites.

“Stayed two nights for business, moved as soon as I could get room elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Let me be upfront - this is not a hotel where women travellers would feel comfortable. Access to rooms unsecure – every morning woke up to advertisements for “massages” and pizza under door. Banging on the doors in the early morning hours by unruly guests. Used condom in the corner of the guest room elevator at 8 am. Did not feel safe walking to from hotel in evening – it is 20 minutes away from restaurants, etc.

I took the time to write and express my concerns to the manager, and received a generic email three weeks later that did not address any issues.

It’s hit or miss as to whether you can park at the hotel – there is no valet parking available – I was told by hotel staff they lost their license to park due to some “incidents”. It is a privately owned parkade and there are no specific spots reserved for hotel guests that I could find.

There is no formal valet or luggage assistance available.

The hotel is very dirty. Dust and dirt are everywhere in public areas and in rooms.

There is no in-room WiFi – seriously? For a business hotel?

Bathroom fixtures and room décor and electronics are 20 years old and falling apart. Bed uncomfortable. Lampshades falling apart and torn curtains.

Front desk staff abrupt to the point of rudeness and shrug their shoulders when asked basic questions about business services.

Room service – almost impossible to get a hold off, kept having to “call me back” and interrupted constantly when trying to order. Food arrived ½ hour after promised, cold.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review on Tripadvisor. We were very concerned by your comments and would like to assure you that your experience is not an indication of our usual high standards. We strive to provide all of our guests with a sense of comfort and security. The indoor parking facility attached to the hotel provides two levels of parking for hotel guests; the top two levels located closest to the hotel lobby elevator. In addition, the parking garage is under video surveillance. We do have bellmen available to assist with luggage, or to accompany you to the parking facility should you request this. We were sorry to learn this was not offered on your arrival. Rest assured your comments have been shared with those concerned. Although it is not easy to receive negative feedback, we feel it provides us with the most effective means to measure and improve our service and we appreciate the opportunity to address any of our guest’s concerns.
