“Gorgeous B&B, awesome location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2010

This is a beautiful B&B a minute from the main strip, Cape Cod style on the outside, definite french flair on the inside. I stayed in room 3 or 4 (the one at the end) and it was impeccable...bright and with a pretty and private view. The whole house is crisp, clean, bright and inviting. Michael is a wonderful host and makes delicious breakfasts as well as great recommendations for dining (must try Stone Road Grill). There are no t.v.s or refrigerators in the rooms but there is a cozy television lounge upstairs with a fridge where I kept my wine and cheese. The only complaint is that I could hear the comings and goings of the other guests, as well as the prep in the kitchen. This was my first B&B experience and I'm sure that this issue goes with the territory, as is the communal dining (not my cup of tea but the other guests were lovely and I had great conversations). I'm just not a B&B kind of girl but if I was, I would stay here every time I was in NOTL.

“Overpriced, Many Better Options in NOTL”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2010

We stayed for (thank goodness) only one hot humid night while going to a play at the Shaw Festival (which was BTW was terrific). Michael, the owner or host?, was basically non-existent, and not helpful. We've stayed at many B & Bs over more than 2 decades visiting NOTL, and many of them are good value, and a number of them have been down right lovely. Our bedroom had a huge, reasonably clean bath room, (no shower cap, little room for our things, and poor lighting) withone pedestal sink and a separate tub and shower. The shower had mildew in the corners. The shades for the windows did little to keep out night or early morning light. For such delusions of grandure, the hosts had spent little regarding amenties or towels. Clearly, the host has delusions of grandure regarding breakfas but the coffee was very good. It always seems sad when an average breakfast is served in a style befitting a pasha. Not very good taste. The other couple staying there, whom we met at breakfast , were lovely. We felt genuinely sorrty for them having to stay more than one night. The location was very good. There is little to no outside space for guests though there is a TV room for them. For $220 per night one expects more. The bedroom was average sized, no TV, exceedingly poor light for reading, THIN, THIN walls (one could hear word for word what was being said elsewhere), and a noisy but non-operating AC. BTW the walls to the non-B & B side of the house must have been thick since, except for being right there when we were paying, it was impossible to rouse our host. When the AC problem was brought to the attention of the host, Michael, with careful courtesy, he basically shrugged his shoulders, and said they'd been having trouble with it. When we got back from the dinner and the theater, it was so hot and humid, that we had to sleep with the door wide open just to breath. Even an electric fan, asked for, but non available, would have shown some effort to be helpful. The style is nouveau riche, and even so, does not succeed.

“Nice option but not not a great value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

My husband and I stay at B&B's on a regular basis so we have a lot to compare.I usually do a lot of research and make a good choice. We have stayed at NOTL a few years ago w/ very little time to book lodgings and had to stay on the outskirts of town in the lovely basement of a McMansion. This time I thought 3 months ahead of time was plenty of time to get one of the top 10 rated B&Bs but no luck getting our dates. We were very happy with the location of 340 Gate and reserved room 2 but I now understand why there were no photos on the web site. The home is situated poorly on the lot and our view from the middle sized room looks out onto the unattractive neighbors yard. The owners have not utilized the large, unkept front yards possibilities for comfy chairs/furniture to relax and read in good weather. There is a very small cement patio off the driveway that only gets sun for a short time. The furniture was dirty and we needed to bring down a washcloth each day to wipe off the table and chairs. My husband really used this space a lot since he has a cigar each day and got the best wi-fi reception there. Our room for some reason got very poor reception. It would have been much more comfortable w/ a few more hours of sun exposure since it was chilly each day out of the sun.The host Michael greeted us and gave a quick tour of the upstairs and our room.We went looking for him a couple times for ironing board, ice, directions etc. We are used to the hosts hanging around a bit more at check in time or showing us how to find someone the first few hours. He did not seem to really enjoy his home or job.Inside the home is really warm and beautiful. Our room was pretty small w/ no room to really spread out and get comfortable. There was one table w/ 1 drawer w/ a broken handle and difficult to pull out drawer to put our underwear etc.The bathroom was REALLY small and again no place to put your toiletries, curling iron, etc.The web site advertises only 3 rooms and we didn't realize until we got home that there are actually 4 rooms and we were put in room 4 without being told. There was a very small shower enclosure that you could barely turn around in.I didn't appreciate being billed the more expensive room rate that did not equate to room 2 photos on the website. The room decor was very pretty and the room smelled great.Nice linens and lots of light. We used the TV room down the hall to relax and sit to read or review directions or check e-mail since there was no where to sit comfortably in our room. This room is also lovely and comfortable but other couples were using it on and off also so limited use.The breakfasts were good but a little overselling on the web site regarding the pastries etc. We had an assortment of average croissants each morning. A delicious but overly sweet granola, yogurt and fruit parfait each morning then a hot breakfast to follow which was good but not great.Great coffee and big pitcher of OJ also. The rooms have very thin walls and EVERYTHING can be heard from the other guests so we were very quiet each night trying not to disturb anyone after 9pm or early in the morning we were whispering until we could hear our nieghbors getting up and talking. Our neighbor was a snorer and we could hear him all night. My husband also snores on and off so I poked him a couple times worried for the 3rd couple having to hear all this thru the night! There was never a newspaper in the morning and the coffee and tea werent' put out until 8AM and my husband and I usually get up at 6:30-7 and would have loved to sit in the TV room w/ coffee and a paper. This is a nice place to stay but more appropriate to charge approx.$50-$75 less a night to be commensurate with the amenities, service, food, views.

“A Nice Gem. Defintely worth checking into.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2009

My husband and I came to Niagara on the Lake for the Wine Festival in September 2009. We stayed in a nice B&B in Napa and were looking forward to finding a nice B&B in NOTL. I did a lot of research and ultimately chose to stay here based on location, price, style of home, and the mention of a yummy breakfast. Michael the innkeeper was very nice on the phone when we made the reservation and was equally prompt and courteous in our numerous emails. My first impression of the home when we arrived was positive. The house looked well taken care of and the landscape looked inviting especially around the side of the home.

We checked in with ease and Michael made us feel right at home. The foyer was made up of brick pavers and it really lent a certain charm to the home. :Up the large staircase we went and came to our room. We stayed in a king room looking out the front of the home with windows looking out onto the side. I also wanted to make a point that the house smelled clean and fresh and appeared well maintained.

Please take a look at all of the pics that I uploaded of our room and some different shots of the home. I loved our room. The colors were soft and the bed was very very comfortable. The window seat was a nice touch. The tub in the bathroom was large and the shower was spacious and clean.

There is a community tv room right down the hall but I would have prefered if we had a tv in our room. This minor detail wouldn't stop us from staying here again..but we most likely would bring our dvd player with us. I would like to mention that the Inn was full and we didn't have a problem with any noise on either night.

We had the choice of 2 different breakfast times and ate in the dining room on the main floor. Michael prepared the breakfasts himself and we did enjoy it alot. I loved the yogurt parfaits that started us off with the frest OJ and tasty coffee and tea selection. The main entree was good as well..one of them being an egg frittata of some sort and the other a french toast. Both days there was a 3 plate stand filled with bakery items, croissants, and fruit.

Michael was very helpful in guiding us to wineries that he thought we might be interested in and even gave us his cell phone number if we ran into any difficulties. The location of the home was ideal to Queen Street. It was just a short walk to the Royal George Theatre and all the shops. We never used the bicycles Michael reserved for us because we were happy to walk. Michael recommended an irish pub/restaurant (Irish Harp?) which turned out to be casual and good.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit and wouldn't mind staying at this B&B again..Thank you Michael for being such a great host...and I hope you read this!

“Loved Chateau Gate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2009

We frequently travel to NOTL and usually stay in Chateau Gate B&B.What a dissapointment to find out Joanna-the forme owner- has moved out..
Chateau Gate used to be an amazing, friendly and artistic place, where one was drawn to new discoveries, The new -340 gate is apparently not even close to what Chateau Gate had to offer.
We chose not to stay ( at 340 Gate) but our friends did and they were not impressed at all. What a pity...
