Our view: If you are in the Niagara area for the first time and want to experience great hospitality in an impeccable home, Abbotsford House is the place to go. Located only blocks away from the pictoresque centre of Niagara-on-the-Lake, this contemporary B&B has 3 beautifully decorated rooms named after Scottish celebrities. All rooms are furnished with antique furniture, immaculately clean - and you will know how fussy the Swiss are in this respect . The rooms are all fitted with their own bathrooms, most en-suite. The four-poster bed in our room (Sir Walter Scott) had a little step to climb up into it, because it was so high. In spite of their antiquity, the beds are not creaky.
The facilities are important, but then, so is the host - or in this instance - the hostess. Margeret Currie is a true Scottish lass with B&B in her blood (Her mother looked after up to 40 boarders in their home in Glasgow during Margeret's youth). While she treats you to a superb breakfast with granola and fresh local fruit as well as her famous egg souffles, she regales you with tales of her life in Canada and Scotland, gives advice on what to see and where to eat - and as a true Scotswoman - on how to get the best value for your money. In our experience, her to do's and not to do's were accurate and very helpful for first time visitors to the area. She seems to know everyone in the area and wherever we went on her recommendation, we were made extremely welcome.
