I have been going to the Shaw theater festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake for many years now. When I first began going with a lady friend of mine, who is a Glaswegian by birth, I looked for a bed-and-breakfast in the NOTL area, and saw the advertisement for Abbotsford House: "A wee bit of Scotland" it said. It has become a virtual home-away-from-home for both of us in the years since then.
Margaret Currie, the owner, is one of those hardy, capable Scotswomen who could have turned the Luftwaffe back to Berlin single-handed if the occasion had arisen. Her breakfasts (included with the room rates) are two-course delights, that are both taste treats and thoroughly satisfying (I don't think that my friend and I have eaten lunch once since we began going there). The house is filled with lovely antique furniture, including a comfortable front parlor that would have done no discredit to the Bennets in "Pride and Prejudice". The rooms are as comfortable as can be, and a good night's sleep is virtually assured. (No television, but you won't feel the lack of it if you're there for the theater.) Bathroom facilities are as clean and well-appointed as one could wish (each bedroom has its own full bath); and Margaret knows everything about everyone in NOTL, and can direct you to the best shops, restaurants, etc. (and has the infuriating habit of NEVER being wrong).
In short, if you want to savor this loveliest of small Canadian towns, you cannot do better than Abbotsford House. For $125.00 a night, it is also a bargain.
