“The best place to stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2009

Henry and Irene are great hosts. They know everything about the area: restaurants, attractions, directions etc. You name it, they know it. They are also extremely accomodating. And Irene makes wonderful breakfasts. This is the best bargain in NOTL by far. I've stayed at several other B&B's and none compare. If you want complete privacy rent both rooms at their place and you'll have sumptuous suite for under $200!. It's better than a $300 room at the local high priced hotels. And Henry can send you to a great restaurant so you spend your room savings on a great meal.

“Quiet, relaxing place to stay at NOTL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2008

Henry & Irene are world travelers who offer a delightful, restful place to stay while enjoying all that NOTL has to offer. The town center is easily within walking distance and the Epp's generous hospitality includes a spacious guest lounge, a backyard gazebo, A/C, Internet access, and bicycles for the asking.

Be sure to ask your hosts about their years in Africa teaching. Their collection of memorabilia is amazing and the stories are even better.

Breakfast was great and the bed very comfortable. We'll be back.

“The perfect B&B hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2008

We made a long weekend out of 4th of July holiday, and visited Niagara-on-the-Lake. We were very fortunate in the choice of lodging.

Henry and Irene Epp are the kind of hosts you always hope to find, when you think about staying at a B&B. Friendly, interesting, thoughtful, excellent chefs, and neither intrusive nor reserved.

On settling in, and over breakfasts, we were treated to fascinating tales of life and travels in Africa, stories of local farming and industry (wine...and retirement), information about the weather, and much more...including how our hosts met!

In response to interest on any local subject, they had maps or books or articles or suggestions to share. They let us borrow a collection of articles on the history of the Underground Railroad in this area -- information we'd been unable to find even at the Chamber of Commerce, which to its shame offered NO information on this important topic, at all.

Staying at Henry and Irene's was great. It's a very short and very pleasant walk to the major tourist street, restaurants, and theatres. It's also a short bike ride down to Niagara Falls. (Make sure you get a bike that fits, if you don't have your own. I was wrecked after riding that far on H&I's loaner bike, which was far too small for my height).

For those of us to whom discrimination is a concern, we're a same-sex couple, and our hosts seemed very comfortable. (It IS Canada, after all, a civilized country, where same-sex families are even recognized by the national government).

Don't miss your chance to stay here -- they're considering retirement!

Finally, I should say that unlike most of the B&Bs I've stayed in, around the world, Henry and Irene don't feed you the same boring 1-2 choices day after day, but vary the dishes. And lastly about diet: we are vegetarians, and our friend who joined us from Toronto is vegan. They were very accommodating. They're even experienced at making breakfasts for celiacs!

“Great Shaw Festival B&B, reasonable rate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2006

We were delighted to find this comfortable and very reasonable B&B during peak season while we were in town to attend plays in the Shaw Festival. The modern home is on a large lot in a quiet neighborhood a few blocks from the center of town. The rate was $90 per night and included a lovely breakfast with fresh fruit, fresh baked croissants, and a hot main dish.

Our queen bedded room was a good size and the adjacent bath was large. The bath is shared with the one other twin-bedded guest room. The hosts' living quarters are separate, and guests have use of a large library with a TV, books, and comfortable couches looking out on a deck with an attached gazebo where we were served iced lemonade in the afternoon. There was a heat wave during our stay, and we really appreciated the central air conditioning.

Henry and Irene Epp are interesting and helpful. They recommended local restaurants and called to find the times ships were going through the Welland Canal locks. He is a retired Biology teacher but they spent several years in Africa where he taught college students. They bought their home in 1965, and the tasteful decor reflects their travels. We appreciated the convenience, quiet, and plentiful parking.
