We made a long weekend out of 4th of July holiday, and visited Niagara-on-the-Lake. We were very fortunate in the choice of lodging.
Henry and Irene Epp are the kind of hosts you always hope to find, when you think about staying at a B&B. Friendly, interesting, thoughtful, excellent chefs, and neither intrusive nor reserved.
On settling in, and over breakfasts, we were treated to fascinating tales of life and travels in Africa, stories of local farming and industry (wine...and retirement), information about the weather, and much more...including how our hosts met!
In response to interest on any local subject, they had maps or books or articles or suggestions to share. They let us borrow a collection of articles on the history of the Underground Railroad in this area -- information we'd been unable to find even at the Chamber of Commerce, which to its shame offered NO information on this important topic, at all.
Staying at Henry and Irene's was great. It's a very short and very pleasant walk to the major tourist street, restaurants, and theatres. It's also a short bike ride down to Niagara Falls. (Make sure you get a bike that fits, if you don't have your own. I was wrecked after riding that far on H&I's loaner bike, which was far too small for my height).
For those of us to whom discrimination is a concern, we're a same-sex couple, and our hosts seemed very comfortable. (It IS Canada, after all, a civilized country, where same-sex families are even recognized by the national government).
Don't miss your chance to stay here -- they're considering retirement!
Finally, I should say that unlike most of the B&Bs I've stayed in, around the world, Henry and Irene don't feed you the same boring 1-2 choices day after day, but vary the dishes. And lastly about diet: we are vegetarians, and our friend who joined us from Toronto is vegan. They were very accommodating. They're even experienced at making breakfasts for celiacs!
