Our Internet search didn't reveal much lodging available at a reasonable price in Niagara-on-the-Lake for a last-minute 3-night weekend trip; but we were able to secure a very affordable room at Heron House, which proved adequate, but not exceptional.
Our room, one of two over the garage of the house was clean and spacious, but sparsely furnished with only two small uncomfortable wicker chairs, a night stand and a magazine table by the door. With no dresser or chest, you either have to live out of your suitcase, or stack you cloths in the closet shelf. Morning showers required some coordination with the guests in the other room as water pressure seemed to be at a premium. With no living room or common area other than the breakfast area to sit in, there wasn't much reason to hang out at the Heron House, other than to sleep and have breakfast.
The location is only three short blocks from Queen Street, the main drag in NOTL and extremely quiet. The off-street parking made it easy to return late without having to worry about where to put the car. Breakfast each morning was superb, delicious and wonderfully presented and clearly showed attention to detail, excellent preparation and fresh ingredients.
Our hostess, Katherine, was cordial, informative and helpful with restaurant suggestions, coupons for discounted or free tasting at the nearby wineries and offers to make reservations and search out Shaw Festival tickets. However, she was largely absent during our stay other than during breakfast, having several other businesses that she is involved in.
The cash or check only payment was inconvenient for non-Canadians, but managable.
