“Very pleasant, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

We stayed here recently for a weekend getaway. The house was quite nice and impeccably kept. Like some other reviewers, we were a little puzzled by the very limited check-in policy but we were able to arrived during a regular check-in time, so it was no problem, but I wouldn't say I felt like they were going out of their way to be accommodating.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted warmly and the orientation was truly perfect -- just enough time spent to point out the directions to the main street, just enough time to show us around the house and to our room, but not so long that we were trying to end the conversation. The room itself was very nice. It didn't compare to say, the Bellagio in Las Vegas, but I think reviewers on these forums need to keep in mind the venue that they were enjoying. For a B&B in a house that dates back nearly 200 years, situated in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, we were generally pleased. We did notice that the gas fireplace in the room seemed pretty feeble, and two of the recessed lights in the ceiling weren't working... certainly not a huge deal but I'll admit that we were disappointed, given the price we paid for the room.

Breakfast was fantastic... but it's worth noting that the start time is prompt! If you arrive 10 minutes late, you'll clearly be the "oh you're coming?" people The food was fantastic and made for a great start to a day of enjoying the region. Also, the location is fantastic for Niagara-on-the-Lake... truly just a few blocks into the heart of the town.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay... I'll admit that, for the price, I would be inclined to look at other options in the future, but if you are looking for comfortable and relaxing accommodations, I wouldn't hesitate to make a reservation here.

“Great location - beautiful property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

My husband and I booked the Post House Inn for our first anniversary. We found that it was less expensive if booked online than over the phone, so you might want to consider that when booking. Our 8 pm (after hours) check in was a bit awkward (done with lockboxes) but the instructions made sense once we were in front of the door.
The location was great - we walked to a packed Irish Pub for dinner on Friday night and were right on the main street for wandering around town on Saturday.
We found the room cold (it was the end of October) and had a tough time regulating the temperature, but the electric fireplace helped. The room itself was nice enough but the bed provided zero back support. My back was so sore in the middle of the night that I spent half the night sleeping on the floor (don't forget it was our anniversary!)
We showed up for breakfast at the recommended time. The food was good and plentiful and we had a great conversation with the other guests.
When I asked Barbara if we could move to a different room with a better mattress, she said that although there were no available rooms at the Post House, she could move us to another B&B that she owns just down the street. So although it was frustrating that we had to pack and move, at least I didn't have to spend the rest of our anniversary on the floor!
(Of note, the other B&B is called the Burke House - it was equally lovely).

Room Tip: Book online. Also, some rooms are in the actual post house, others are in the addition. If you'...

“Completely Unimpressed”

Stayed overnight recently. Hotel itself is ok, but we had major dramas about which we are still furious. We checked out on the Saturday morning and upon arriving back home, realised that one member from our party had left some clothing behind. We immediately contacted the owner to ask her to gather the items and we would pay to have them posted back to us. In her response, she said that she would be charging a $25 "admin fee", plus postage. This was upsetting to us but we felt we had little choice if we wanted the clothes back and so we said she could use the credit card she had on file. We then waited for the parcel to come in the mail.

Imagine our shock when a COURIER arrived at our door with the parcel! The innkeeper had no permission to misuse the credit card in this way and in the end it cost almost $70 to get the items back! When contacted as to why she had used a courier without permission or discussion, she just said we should say thank you and offered no explanation!

We are baffled and extremely upset and we will NEVER set foot in there again.

There were four persons in this party, one couple of which was the guests in laws- on a trip from their homeland. We had great chats about Canada and the surrounding town of Niagara on the Lake.

We always remind guests to check their rooms for their belongings, especially when they are far from home. After the guest left, we discovered that the in-laws had left entire dresser drawer of clothing. When the guest called we said we had found the personal items and could ship them, anyway they preferred.

A couple of phone calls later the guests approved the use of their credit card for a quick shipment, as the in laws were about to leave Canada for home.

“Not value for money”

Firstly, the check-in times are weird and too strict. For the money, we had high expectations of the room, but were very disappointed. There were appliances in the room, but there was a note to say that nothing could be used due to some local bylaw. Not sure why they aren't removed altogether as it looks silly. If you have a third person with you, expect to pay a huge surcharge for them sleeping on a rather poor quality fold out couch. I don't think I've ever paid more than $20 for an extra person in a hotel room, but here you have to pay about $60.
Wallpaper peeling in the bathroom looked poor. There is a thermostat and a gas fireplace which were almost impossible to regulate together.
Also, there are fake plants everywhere which is very unappealing.
Breakfast is ok, but don't expect anything hot if you come close to the end of the breakfast time, you'll just have to make do with whatever is left on the table, even if it's cold eggs and pancakes.
Overall, would never stay here again - we've travelled all over the world and have stayed in beautiful places which cost less than this inn. Only positive thing about the inn is the location to the main street.

The coach is the most requested room due to its size, quality, privacy, amenities. Since guests have many different experiences we try to accommodate the most important ones.

A wet bar is a unique feature of the room. and although it has a microwave and burners, local town laws forbid the use in a bed and breakfast. We have installed a thermostat for the fireplace, in conjuction with the room temperature control to acccommodate the most varied heating needs of our guest. There are instructions for both in the room, along with the ability to open 4 windows.

Our breakfast policy, over the 14 years, has culminated in a current policy of a continental breakfast from 8 am (for the early risers) to 9:30am (for the late risers), in addition to offering a hot entree at 8:45am where guests gather at the dining room table to share stories, experiences and general global chat.. Also, guests may request breakfast in room at 10am.

Due to the travelers every changing schedules, we have also found that the standard check in, staff assisted one, from 3pm until 4:30pm works along with the self check in policy of a house code entry. We prefer to meet all of our guests, but the timing of their travels sometimes prohibit them from arriving during our standard check in time. this check in time affords us the opportunity to offer local dining, theater etc information and to get to know the guests wants and needs.

The beauty of travel is to enjoy the place that you stay, its customs, food and its people.

“Great Place to Stay in a Beautiful City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

This was our second visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and we have stayed at the Post House Inn on both occasions The rooms and facilities are very clean and well maintained and seem to retain their new look. The breakfasts are good, but not so over the top that you don't want to eat for the rest of the day. Barbara is very good at making everyone feel comfortable at breakfast and getting to know your fellow travelers. She is also very good with suggestions on what to see and where to eat dinner. We would definitely stay here again!
