“Nice location ... average service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

Of the three inns we stayed in during our vacation in Montreal, Kingston and Toronto the Summer House Inn came in third.

I found the inn on the Internet and reviews seemed pretty good. What we found was a pretty room with a somewhat noisy in-the-window air conditioner. The inn itself was not air-conditioned and the days we were there the temperature was in the 80s (F) / 29 (C).

When we arrived I noticed there were used bars of soap left in our shower. The inn provided no bathroom amenities like the other inns. No big deal. They advertise free Wifi but they changed providers a few weeks before we arrived and the gentleman who checked us in didn’t know the password. The innkeeper, Joan, wouldn’t be back until later that evening so we had to wait until the next day to get the password.

Our first breakfast was very nice. However, I noticed the butter dish was left out all day and still on the dining room table the next morning. Because of the heat it was quite melted and unattractive. After breakfast we went kayaking (Ayoh Kayak Rentals is excellent and Andrew is very eager to please). After returning to our room we discovered there was no electricity in our room but there was power in the room across from us. After waiting an hour and a half for someone to return to the inn (and no one did) we called the number posted on the front door and reached Bill the gentleman who checked us in the day before. I asked about a circuit breaker since it looked like I’d have to fix things myself if we wanted air conditioning. He told me where to go in the basement to locate the electrical box. I found it, reset the breaker, and we had electricity back.

The second morning Joan, the innkeeper, mentioned the electrical problem but offer no consideration for that or the unclean shower we found on arrival. We ate breakfast (melted butter still on the table along with the covered cake plate of left over muffins from the day before) and checked out.

Joan apparently has other interests or a job because we only saw her at the inn for breakfast, never during the day or in the evening. The inn is beautiful, the rooms are large, the location is close to downtown, but we would not return.

“Very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2010

My husband, myself, and our 14 year old daughter stayed overnight this past weekend.
The lovely home was very comfortable and nicely decorated. Our breakfast was delicious and we had everything we needed. The proximity to restaurants downtown was great.

“Loved this place, parlours to explore, a dog to cuddle, history in the walls”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2009

Joan was very hospitable, we felt that we were at home and made to feel very comfortable and welcome. The Autumn Room was lovely, clean and spacious, a tiny but very nice bathroom with shower and plenty of space for the two of us. I loved the feeling of being able to explore this wonderful old historic building, then sit for a quiet moment in one of the lovely parlours sipping a glass of wine from Joan while Simon the dog slept on my lap and later watching the baseball game on the flat screen TV in one of the other parlours. The location is prime, very close to everything, short walks to all of the shops, the restaurants and the lakes. Joan gives very good advice on food choices, follow her lead. We are from Vancouver, but we had been visiting grandkids in Toronto and decided to visit Kingston for the first time. It was wonderful and we shall return to the city and certainly to the Summer House Inn, it was a great B&B experience, one of the best we have ever had.

“Bills a Diamond !!! and Simons a peach !!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

My Husband and i, Our Son and his young lady have just spent 5 days at this friendly, welcoming and comfortable family home in the heart of Kingston. Joan was away and so we were very well looked after by Bill and his dog Simon. We arrived from a few days in Niagra to Kingston station where we were met by Bill who took us back to the Summer House in his car, which was very welcome. On arrival we were shown to our rooms, our Son found the Autumn room extremely comfortable, and en-suite with a walk in shower. We used the owners room which again was very comfy although a little drafty, but fixing the window is on the list of jobs Bill wants to get on with, and he will as he is very versatile and can also make an incredible omellete!! Our room had an adjoining large bathroom, though not en-suite it didnt make any difference to us at all. We still had it all to ourselves. Both rooms had four poster beds and ours had television and a DVD player, though no tea and coffee making facilities, but that is quite common in Canada i believe. Bill brought us up a tray of tea as we unpacked and told us to help ourselves any time in the kitchen downstairs. The house is Victorian and has so much character and has a charming atmosphere. Bill had to return to work on the weekdays but left us with beautiful home made fruit salads, fruit juices, yoghurts, toast, bagels, jams, cereals grapefrit slices and an array of pastries and of course plenty of coffee. We preferred it to a full cooked breakfast as we could help ourselves to what we wanted. On one of the days it poured really hard with rain and we were caught in it, but immediately Bill offerred to dry the jeans in his tumble dryer, a nice touch we thought. We all agreed that the stay felt as thoughwe were having a relaxing few days with a favourite relative and his absolutely adorable dog Simon. IWe would most definately return if we should hopefully go back to Kingston, what a unique, attractive city with such friendly people, and what an amazing holiday we had with our wondeful Son and his lady.10 out of 10.

“Great visit of the Summer house Inn in Kingston”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2009

Visiting Canada from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, we visited the nice city of Kingston at lake Ontario for three days. The tourist office recommended the Summer house Inn as being downtown and a nice bed and breakfast.

We called and were welcomed half an hour later by Joan. The room was comfortable and had a balcony were we could relax in the sunny weather. Besides that we could use a clean luxe bathroom with a jakuzi in it. We actually liked the place so much we asked, (last minute) if we could stay an extra day. The place was actually booked, but Joan arranged that we could use another comfortable room, with an entrance at the garden.

The place was really need, so we are happy to recommend it.

Thanks Joan!

Best regards,

Arjen Post
