Of the three inns we stayed in during our vacation in Montreal, Kingston and Toronto the Summer House Inn came in third.
I found the inn on the Internet and reviews seemed pretty good. What we found was a pretty room with a somewhat noisy in-the-window air conditioner. The inn itself was not air-conditioned and the days we were there the temperature was in the 80s (F) / 29 (C).
When we arrived I noticed there were used bars of soap left in our shower. The inn provided no bathroom amenities like the other inns. No big deal. They advertise free Wifi but they changed providers a few weeks before we arrived and the gentleman who checked us in didn’t know the password. The innkeeper, Joan, wouldn’t be back until later that evening so we had to wait until the next day to get the password.
Our first breakfast was very nice. However, I noticed the butter dish was left out all day and still on the dining room table the next morning. Because of the heat it was quite melted and unattractive. After breakfast we went kayaking (Ayoh Kayak Rentals is excellent and Andrew is very eager to please). After returning to our room we discovered there was no electricity in our room but there was power in the room across from us. After waiting an hour and a half for someone to return to the inn (and no one did) we called the number posted on the front door and reached Bill the gentleman who checked us in the day before. I asked about a circuit breaker since it looked like I’d have to fix things myself if we wanted air conditioning. He told me where to go in the basement to locate the electrical box. I found it, reset the breaker, and we had electricity back.
The second morning Joan, the innkeeper, mentioned the electrical problem but offer no consideration for that or the unclean shower we found on arrival. We ate breakfast (melted butter still on the table along with the covered cake plate of left over muffins from the day before) and checked out.
Joan apparently has other interests or a job because we only saw her at the inn for breakfast, never during the day or in the evening. The inn is beautiful, the rooms are large, the location is close to downtown, but we would not return.
