“Cozy rooms with a trendy kick”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

My friend and I stayed here in Feb 2011 to attend a 4 day review course in the connecting Hamilton Conference Centre since there was a group discount. I was wary from the Tripadvisor reviews, but ended up being pleasantly surprised.

ROOMS: We loved our room. Size-wise, it was fairly standard, but we found the beds/duvets wonderfully plushy and loved the contemporary upgrades in the bathrooms. We spent 2 comfortable evenings in, happily studying and watching movies - which I think speaks to the quality of our room. (My only caveat is that one person did experience bed bugs. Their room was changed right away with no further issues. There were approximately 100+ people with us, and this was the only complaint I heard about.)

SERVICE: Sheraton staff were affable, eager to please and professional. We had smooth service from check in, luggage holding, to getting us to the airport in one piece. There is a nice area upstairs with 10 or so new computers + printers for business use. Here, the internet is free whereas in-room access is $10 per day.

FOOD: The food was great. If you aren't venturing far, you will not be underfed. We ordered room service once - the delivery was prompt, the portions generous, and the food piping hot and delicious. There are two restaurants peering over the lobby: Chagall's was like an upscale Earl's and the lounge area serves casual bar-like food, but both were enjoyable and had great ambience.

LOCATION: We had to take a taxi from the airport since we needed to be downtown. It was a $15 ride. The attached mall gave us easy access to fast food, Starbucks, and a smattering of clothing franchises to pick up any items you might need. I would not consider it an thrilling shopping experience, but it was convenient. We explored about 15 blocks west of the Sheraton - some areas were quiet, there were people going about their business and maybe a couple homeless people, but never felt endangered.

Overall, I was pleased with this hotel. In fact, it exceeded my expectations because they have introduced increasingly contemporary stylings to a fairly traditional brand. I would be more than happy to return.

“Potential for much more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

In downtown Hamilton, attached to Jackson Square, shops and a market. Was expecting more from front staff, who could have been more attentive. The property charges for parking and internet service in the room. Parking was affordably priced and internet service was OK.
Nice fitness facility.

“Missing amenities in re-design, very pleasant staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

For those needing a hotel west of Toronto whose business takes them to the Hamilton ("steel-town") area, the Sheraton Hamilton is an adequate, not stellar, hotel. Good news is that the hotel staff are generally very friendly and eager to please. Room service is typical for this type of hotel and food offerings are good, albeit it is by no means "fine dining". The hotel is well located in downtown Hamilton, linked to an underground mall that connects to many nearby office towers.

I had a room on the club floor. The room was clean and spacious (it was a corner-room). Yet other than the desk chair, there was only one arm-chair in the room. There also was no ottoman. Thus, when sitting and watching TV or eating from room service, the absence of an ottoman was noticeable. I asked the front desk about this, and was told that while there used to be footstools in these corner rooms (they are certainly large enough to fit a footstool and a second chair--otherwise, for two people in a room, only one can sit on a comfortable chair!), after renovations these were not replaced.

This may be a new Sheraton "brand standard" and, if so, it is disappointing. Room designers need to consider that there could be more than two people in a hotel room, and even if the room is only occupied by one, having an ottoman is standard in most hotel rooms everywhere.

The bathroom was large but the new glass shower with a half-door allows water to flow out onto the bathroom floor. Again, this is an example of not thinking a re-design through, as putting on a proper glass shower door would avoid such issues. Also, there is no toe-tap in the shower--so when one turns on the water one gets a shot of cold water in the pipe. That last is an example of cutting corners on construction--a toe-tap, or "toe-test" tap in a shower, is usually present although in some new construction hotels I have seen this left out--again, bean-counters prevailing over common sense and customer comfort.

Club floor amenities are good. A buffet breakfast is available for those on the club floor; usually includes eggs and bacon, along with fresh fruit, etc. The evening snacks are adequate. Bottled water, soft drinks and coffee are available 24/7--a nice touch.

Would I stay here again if in the area? Yes. Again, the service was great, front-desk friendly and helpful, meeting room facilities suitable. it is not the hotel's fault if it is following mandatory Sheraton brand standards on the items noted above, but hopefully somebody at Sheraton smartens up about these missing amenities. Sometimes these "little details" add a lot in comfort when one is on the road.

one other point: internet is not free unless you are Starwood Diamond (I believe you get it free if you are very high up in the Starwood loyalty chain). In my view, all hotel chains should provide complimentary in-room internet access. Interestingly, some of the less expensive brands (Embassy suites, Hampton) do provide this without extra costs, but the supposedly "better" hotels (Sheraton, Hilton) tag on additional costs. Consumers should make their points about this as eventually this should become a standard, included item.

Room Tip: ask for a corner room, and try to get a club floor room.

Great stay at The Sheraton Hamilton. Check in was easy and very friendly and I was upgraded to a corner king. The room was immaculate and very well laid out. Parking was very easy for a downtown hotel and underground to boot! Overall I would stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.
