“An acquired taste”

In my years of travelling this must be one of the most difficult hotels to review. The location is stunning with a long terrace overlooking Spoleto and surrounding countryside. The building has a great deal of history and many of the communal rooms are dark with antiquities relating to its past. Because of this at times when no one was around it was a little eerie. The pool area appeared a little under used and slightly neglected. The food was excellent but a little pricey. We had a pre set menu which was good value and included local wine. The owner, a lady called Valerie, was constantly on hand but with cigarette and wine in hand. We found her very helpful and a great character but I suspect some people expecting a clinical opertation (hotel not cheap) may not have found this so appealing. She also had two dogs running around the terrace and a rabbit in a cage on a table. The rooms were genarally clean but despite the location had no views (or TV's if that's your thing) and a little dusty in places. The narrow road to the hotel off the tarmac has precipitous sides. In general we are people that like local quirkiness and characters so as such we had an excellent stay. I suspect others may not think so. I have rated the hotel based on our enjoyable experience.

“a rare treat. great host, wonderful and historic setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

overlooking spoleto and convenient to many day trips like Montefalco, Bevagna, Assisi. the site and terrace make it hard to leave. a lot of history here and much to explore in the hotel itself. the wine cellar was the cave carved into the rock by the first monk to live at this location. quite magical.

one of my best meals ever here!

“Spectacular and very Unique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2010

We could see the hotel high on the hill as we entered Monteluco! WOW. Steep winding drive so make sure you arrive during the day. From the moment we arrived we knew we had found a very spcial place. Words can not describe how old, yet wonderfully preserved this place is. We were surprised with an grade to a bigger and very romantic room, Fra Ginepro. The last night there were we the only ones eating dinner. We were treated like royality. They made us a special dinner and we were seated in the dining room at the 12 foot long table. We were given a private tour of the Cardinal's Room by the owner. Traveling 3 weeks all over Itlay this by far had the best view ,the best breakfast and dinner and the best staff. This hotel if for traveerls who want comfort but also a very different travel experience.

“Like a dream”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2010

During a roundtrip in Italy we spent 2 nights in this paradise! We did not know what to expect and it is hard to describe what we felt when entering this place high up the hill in the sun, with a spectacular view over the mountains and Spoleto. After a very warm welcome by the lovely host Valeria and her staff, we felt instantly at home and never wanted to leave the place anymore.
First the upgrade to the suite Il Cardinale with antique furniture and on the other hand a design bathroom and all the comfort you need. This old convent with chapel was a museum allover. Beautiful! And everywhere the lovely views from sunset till dawn. The owner Valeria and the very professional staff did us feel relaxed and happy. They were there when you wanted them, but always discrete. We have experienced excellent service. The staff is a dedicated team and proud of their residenza. They did us feel like in heaven. On top of that the excellent food that was always served on the magnificant terrace. The lush rosegarden, attractive pool, the atmosphere. It was a fairy tale, a place we will never forget!
Thank you so much dear Valeria to make this the best experience we ever had. We wih you all good luck and happiness.

Tot ziens en hartelijke groet uit Nederland.
Arrivederci!

“Wow, what an amazing place and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2009

For myself and my group this was the most amazing place, incredible staff and delightful experience. I took a group of photographers and models to Eremo delle Grazie. It was our base over a 4 day period. It was also our workshop location for few of those days. The hospitality was a quiet joy. They were always there when you needed something and seem to vanish when you didn't.

The morning view always setup for a perfect day. The food was incredible and diverse, wonderfully, for us anyway, Italian. It was serene, with so many things to explore. I have never stayed in place so rich in history. We never felt we were in a hotel but rather a friends home.

Valeria has a perfect host. If you are looking for a unique experience this is the place. I would and will visit there again.
