“Good value for downtown location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

Overall, this was a pretty good place to stay. Definitely one of the more affordable options in downtown Halifax, and with free parking, free breakfast, free wi-fi, etc. it is a good value for a room in the city. The rooms are a bit basic, and it's an old building, so you will hear people moving about. To me, this just adds to the communal feel of the place, but some folks might not enjoy the noise, I suppose. The third floor has a few decks; it's a pretty nice place to have a smoke and see how Halifaxians go about their days. And yes, the folks at the front desk are super helpful and will tell you everything to see and do if you have a good minute. At the end of the day, the name says it all. It is Commons Inn all the way. If you're looking for a comfortable room, this place will do. If you need something really special, check out closer to downtown, just be prepared to pay the price.

Room Tip: The higher you go, the quieter it gets.

“Wouldn't stay here again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

We booked for three nights but left after one. Our room was on the top floor so getting all our bags there was a bit of a challenge. We found the room all right but the fruit flies bothered us all night. I have never experienced a fruit fly problem in a hotel before. The room could have been cleaner and the bathroom wasn't up to the standard of what we usually find in a hotel of this price. The location was all right but seemed a little grungy. The continental breakfast was just average as well.

Unfortunately, when open fruit and wine is kept in the room, there is very little we can do about fruit flies in the summer months - they go where they can get food. We're very sorry for any inconvenience this caused.

“Good for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

We stayed in two separeate rooms on two separate nights. The first night was a last minute stay and the only thing available was a basement room... we payed $80 and it wasn't worth much more. The room wasn't overly musty but there were water stains on the bathroom ceiling and around the window trim. Bed was fine and the room was clean, which to me is the most important part. The second night we stayed on the 3rd floor and the room was definitely acceptable. You will not find anything close to this price in other Halifax hotels, so if you don't feel like paying an arm and a leg for a place to rest your head, this is a great choice.
The neighbourhood is a little on the rough side but nothing scary. We never felt uncomfortable, even at night coming back from the bars. There's a great greasy spoon across the street called Cousins, cheapest breakfast I've ever encountered and a great hangover cure! Continental breakfast is included at the Inn but we didn't partake.
A bit of a walk downtown but very managable.

“Getting a lot for a cheap room rate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

We stayed four nights at the Commons Inn in Halifax. It's the 2nd cheapest hotel in town. We stayed first three nights in a Deluxe room. Everything was all right : flat screen tv, micro wave, fridge, coffee maker. Parking and continental breakfast are included. Only one thing to respect : have the room made before three o'clock or it won't be done. Anyway, this happened to us (leave the room after three) and when i went to the desk to say the room hadn't been done, the clerk brought new towels etc... They don't change the sheets everyday not even every three days but they are so friendly (Russel and Michael), helping you with your visit of the city, your trip in Nova Scotia and whatever you can ask them that the lack of service sometime is easely forgotten. So, one has to take in consideration the fact that one cannot easely get a 5 stars service for a (well deserved) 3 stars hotel. The cost is unbelivably cheaper than what charge the other hotels in Halifax.
There is maybe the site and the walking distance to the heart of the city that are a minus. It's easely compensated if you have a car.
We came back to the hotel for our last night in Nova Scotia. Russel gave us the only suite of the hotel. What should I say then ? Its a good good good bargain. (and a 10 per cent discount if you stay more than two nights). Written and translated from my French language orientated mind. Francoise H.

“Great Location, Great Value, & Excellent Customer Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

This is not a 5-star luxury hotel with hoity-toity amenities. But this is a great little inn centrally located with amazing customer service in a world where that seems to be lacking.

Pros: great location--literally 5-10 minutes near Citadel and about 15 minutes to downtown/boardwalk; we loved the colorful houses in the nearby neighborhoods. Great free breakfast (toast, pastries, fruit, pb, jelly/jam, butter, 3 kinds of cereal, juice, milk, coffee, tea--trust me it fill you up!), two upstairs patios, clean, simple rooms that come with clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, great-working a/c, microwave and mini fridge, and a staff so ready to help you. All of this at a very affordable price for those of us who seek adventure on a budget. Hotel is completely NON-smoking!

Cons: no elevator = lots of stairs, central location does require a walk back UPHILL almost the entire way from downtown (but such a lovely walk), not a huge selection of restaurants in close proximity (but there are some!). Bathroom only had a shower with no tub (if that matters to you). And, yes, there is a unique smell to the room which I always equate with old house smell.

Although this is not a perfect little inn, I am giving it 5 stars for the value and location. I plan to come back to Halifax and I will be staying with the Commons Inn again!

Room Tip: If you are up to it, ask for rooms on top floor = quiet!
