“Great hotel with great service...”

The Super 8 is a short drive from the airport but farther from downtown than some other hotels. Though nothing is very far away in Yellowknife.

The rooms are more than adequate, well maintained and clean; despite outside temperatures between -30°C and -40°C during our stay the rooms were warm and comfortable.

We were in Yellowknife to see the northern lights so were coming and going at all hours of the day and night and must have met just about all of the reception staff who were all helpful and friendly.

The buffet breakfast has plenty of choice and will set you up for the day, there is also a Tim Horton’s just outside the front door and a Wal-Mart across the parking lot.

The hotel has a small car park, about half of the spaces have power hook ups, but there is more parking outside the Wal-Mart.

If you hire a car during the winter keep an eye on the dashboard warning lights, we had 3 cars in 5 days due to different engine failures, this is not uncommon at very low temperatures and Hertz were very apologetic and quickly swapped the cars for us.

The ice road is a must do if you are there in the winter, either in your own car or on a guided tour.

“Best service in Yellowknife!!”

I have travelled to Yellowknife several times and have stayed at many of the hotels in town. The Super 8 was by far the best of all the hotels. The staff right from check in to check out was friendly and personal. During my 4 day stay the front desk staff and the housekeeping staff made me feel welcome and were always asking how my stay was. My room was clean, and smelled fresh. The breakfast in the morning, which is free, was great. Loved the make your own waffles.
The internet was a little slow, but considering the excellent service I received, I will always stay at the Super 8.

“Wouldn't stay here again!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

Didn't find the staff eager to help. After our first night, we discovered that 83 year old grandma's room didn't shut securely (all I had to do was push it a little and it opened, even though she tried locking it with the bolt). We went to the staff and they acknowledge our complaint, noted that it was an off-rent room and she shouldn't have been given the room but never even offered to switch her until we told them that they had too! Poor grandma!
In our room, the chairs and bedspread were stained, the lock latch was broken (but we could still secure it). There was mold in the bathtub (may have been black mold but I didn't want to explore it any more.) Definately not worth the price and would not recommend it at all.
What a disappointment after we stayed at beautiful one in High Level, AB where they staff and rooms were much more than we expected.

“Tim Horton donuts and Wal-mart nextdoor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2009

Highlight of this place is Tim Horton's, which is spitting distance and Wal-Mart and Marks Work Warehouse which are just a few meters away, sprinter Usian Bolt can probably run between the three in 10 seconds flat.

The front desk clerk was very friendly, genuine friendly, not this is a hotel its my job to be welcoming kid of friendly.

The rooms were clean, but small. I was in a non-smoking and was happy to smell it didn't smell like smoke.

I got the sense the ceiling and walls are susceptible to noise transfer, so if you are unlucky to be under or beside a noisy guest it might ruin a nights sleep. I could hear the person above me walking around. It was very muffled but if you are sensitive to noise you might want to check out another place.

Nice surprise with the continental breakfast was best I've had anyways. The had waffle batter to make yourself fresh waffles, variety of breakfast cereals, Tim Horton donuts (fresh), toast, variety of good yogurts, fruit, cookies, juice, coffee, tea all the usual options at continental breakfasts but not stale.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are glad you have enjoyed your visit to the Super 8 Motel. It's very pleasing to know you enjoyed the location of our Motel. It is a desired location to many of our guests as many of the most desired restaurants and shopping stores are just steps away from our front door. I would also like to note that we are in fact a 100% smoke free facility and have been now for several years. To my knowledge we are the only 100% non smoking hotel in Yellowknife. Again, thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again soon.

“Checked out after 2 days.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2008

I recently travelled to Yellowknife for business. I checked into this hotel and checked out after only two nights (I was scheduled to stay for 14).
When I arrived there was a broken window on the outside. Safety is a concern for me as I travel alone.
The front desk staff on check in were not very helpful (although everyone else I dealt with during my stay were extremely helpful and friendly).
I had been promised a fridge and microwave in the suite during my reservation. The rooms do not come with them but they have some on supply for guests requiring them. The staff informed me that the maintenance person was not in for the day and that they would get one or the other to me the next day. I never was able to get either in my suite during my stay.
The hotel room was very clean and nice except for a single dirty towel hanging in the shower when I checked in.
The continental breakfast was very good. They had a nice lay out with plenty of variety. Cereal, bagels, toast and even waffle mix and a waffle iron.
My particular room had some very big problems. The heater did not work properly (which is not acceptable when it is -40C outside) and the shower stopper was broken and would not let water drain out of the tub. I am assuming that my room was the only one with problems like this as I did not hear anyone else complaining while I was there.
Despite the positives of this hotel I would not stay there again.
