The Yellowknife Inn is very well-positioned, located right in the middle of downtown Yellowknife, and therefore within easy walking distance of the mall, several restaurants, and the businesses located downtown. I also have to mention that I am very much a country boy--when I travel, I avoid downtown areas like the plague. But we are talking about Yellowknife, after all, so the downtown area is not crowded or congested, and even a country boy like me felt relaxed, like I had enough breathing room.
However, parking can be an issue. There isn't free parking--and there is very little parking on the street outside the hotel. Actually, there is barely enough room to pull your vehicle off the street, even to run inside for five minutes and check in. (There was room for our rental vehicle to pull up next to the front steps, but just barely.) We were, however, lucky enough to be able to use one of the few parking spaces that the hotel keeps in the parking garage under the complex. The hotel is connected to the mall, which is connected (in a circuitous way) to the parking garage below. Finding your way from the parking garage to the hotel can be a bit of an adventure, and we found ourselves emerging in the mall after hours (with the entrance doors locked so that we couldn't exit) but we eventually found an open door and made our way back around the outside of the building to the front entrance of the hotel.
The room was furnished nicely. The bathroom, if a bit outdated, was in good condition. Not a lot of frills, but everything was functional and in decent repair. For heating, there is a radiator along the wall below the windows (also a bit dated), however, to our great surprise, there was NO air conditioning in the room at all, and though the windows were large, only a few very small panes would open up, and they didn't let any air circulate, anyway. We stayed there in early August, and even at 18°C / 65°F, the room was stifling.
I do have to give the staff a thumbs-up, though. They were very friendly, and very attentive. I try never to complain when I'm traveling, as I don't want to be one of "those" kind of vacationers, but we did mention that the room was uncomfortable because it was so hot and stuffy, and asked if we could borrow a fan. We went out for a few hours, and came back to find a very nice, high-tech, top of the line oscillating fan waiting for us in the room, so I definitely give them high marks for being accomodating! That was much appreciated. There is also 24-hour security in the lobby, and access to the elevator is only granted to those who have a room key card.
The rooms are a bit on the pricey side, given their quality. However in a remote place like Yellowknife, you're going to pay more for a room like this than you would in, say, upstate New York.
All in all, I'd stay here again--after driving past several of the other lodging choices in town, I'd say this was one of the best--but the biggest drawback was not having the A/C.
