“A Decent Hotel in a Fascinating Town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

The Explorer Hotel is one of the top hotels in the City. It is often busy and can be quite expensive ($165/night for a conference rate). It is a short walk from downtown. The hotel is well-maintained and comfortable -- and is as standard as they come. Do not expect any northern frills or exceptional elements. The restaurant is okay, but less than compelling The rooms are comfortable, clean and spacious. The Internet worked poorly, however, and was a huge inconvenience. There was a decent business centre, however, where the Internet was more reliable.

“Great, was my home for the week!”

Great hospitality! Room was great and well cleaned. Two little irritants,
It was very warm and you can't turn down the thermostat or open the window. Also, the plumbing needs a bit of work. Very noisy when water being used in the next room. Service and food was very good. Enjoyed the lounge a couple of times. Will book again if I go back to Yellowknife.

“Good place to stay in Yellowknife”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

My rating is actually "Good", not "Average", rating it compared with other Yellowknife hotels I have used. This is definitely the best, but there is room for improvement.

On the plus side, the rooms are nice, good decor. Staff are friendly, and I found the hotel bar/restaurant very good. Free Wifi is always a plus, especially since my blackberry did not work in town, just in the hotel. I also found myself in need of a dentist, and there is one right next to the hotel, a very nice dental practice that fixed me up with a smile. The fact that they have smoking rooms is also a bonus, as I prefer not to have to go out in the cold and wind for a puff. There is also a coffee maker in the room. The rooms were clean, but I have seen better. The bed was hard but fairly comfortable.

On the downside, there is a rather treacherous walk from the hotel into town. with ice and snow on the steep sidewalk in front of the hotel, I was forced to walk on the steep driveway, which is not a good thing. For my entire stay (3 days) nothing appeared to have been done about that sidewalk. Also, it would have been great to have a mini-fridge in the room to hold the milk that I bought for my coffee. I kept it on ice in the ice bucket. As it is, there is only one ice machine in the hotel and that is in the lobby, so it's a bit of an ordeal to keep anything cold in the room.

It would also be a nice touch to have a cordless phone in the room, for versatility. Staff were OK but resistant to my request for a late check-out (one hour). When I persisted (explaining that my plane would not leave for another two hours), they acquiesced, but didn't ask for my room number or make any calls. So why the resistance if it was simply a matter of saying "yes"? All that being said, I would stay there again, because it is better than the others. Nevertheless, they need to go farther to be better than the equivalent to a 3 star in more southerly cities, i.e. Edmonton or Winnipeg.

“Good location in Yellowknife”

Rooms clean and comfortable.
Decent restaurant and bar within the hotel which is important when the temperature outside is minus 30.
Easy walk or cab ride to downtown restaurants if the weather is not frigid.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the newly renovated rooms.

“Still the place to stay in Yellowknife”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

Stayed in the hotel sporadically for business between july to oct 2011. Still the best hotel in YK in my opinion (not much to choose from), in terms of facilities and quality of the rooms but some are really hit and miss. The newer rooms are fine but some of the others have faulty TVs, inefficient heating or a creaking bed. Room service and restaurant food is so-so but overpriced, much better to dine at the Black Knight Pub nearby instead. The gym is pretty terrible too and in need of makeover.

But overall still a homely hotel with good location and the iphone docks in each room is really a boon.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the higher floors and in the newer wing.
