“Really Enjoyed Our Stay - Great Pub Too”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2010

This inn (hotel) came highly recommended by a fellow motorcyclist. We travelled to St John's for the HOG rally. We stayed in a room that faced the courtyard that was sheltered from the street. We were able to park our Harley's outside our door to keep an eye on them. First I want to say that this inn is one of the most affordable and yet classy in St John's. I am so glad that we took the advice of "Harley B" and changed our reservation to this establishment. The staff were friendly. The room was clean, the beds comfortable, the bathroom neat/clean and it had plenty of towels. Our room had a frig which was perfect. With motorcycles being "weather permitting" at times - we enjoyed a number of meals at the pub instead of riding in the rain. The pub was excellent. They had a seafood linguini that my husband raved about. The food prices were very reasonable and nightly specials highly recommended. It also has close promixity to the University. It was quiet and in a central location. I thought it had a lot of charm - and would stay there again without hesitation. In fact when the Newfoundland Harley Group announces their next rally my husband and I will be coming back to this much enjoyed hotel/inn. Friendly staff. Good parking. Comfy beds. Good value for your money. Clean rooms - need I say more!

“Ick”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2009

My BF and I have travelled extensively (Canada, US, Asia, Europe, Caribbean) and neither of us will stay at the Guv'nor again. My six year old son looked in the bathroom and said "Mama, it looks GERMY!". The duvets on the bed were full of lumps, and the shower didn't work correctly. Not only that, but the air conditioning was one of those window units and it was undersized for the room. In addition to being under-sized, it was really noisy. Needless to say, we had a very uncomfortable night. I would not recommend this place. The food in the restaurant was also a poor representation of NL cuisine.

“Would not Stay Again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2009

This hotel was overall dirty and in need of work. The staff were friendly, the bed comfortable and it was easy to get to the hotel but that would not be enough for me to return. The main hallway smelled strongly of bbq sauce at one end and of cooking ground beef at the other (for a number of nights). The carpet had that greasy look that comes from not being cleaned recently. The bathroom fan had a wad of toilet paper forced under one side. If it was intended to lessen the noise made by the fan then it failed horribly. Best part - comfortable bed, easy location to get to. Worst part - hotel cleanliness and condition.

“Adequate accommodation in St' John's”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2008

This is an adequate, reasonably-priced hotel in St. John's, the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is close to the University and main hospital, but relatively far from tourist attractions, shopping and restaurants. I cannot recommend the attached restaurant, the Guv'nor Pub and Eatery where we had the only truly bad meal we ever had in Newfoundland. In the Pub's defense, we arrived fairly late for dinner on a Sunday evening, but even the simple items we ordered, a Greek salad and a burger platter, were almost inedible. The Greek salad was some tired iceberg lettuce, one small tomato wedge and some tired cucumber. When we complained the price was reduced twenty percent and a bowl of feta cheese brought to add to the salad.
Our initial impression of our room was unfavorable, but the room proved quiet and comfortable enough for us to stay for the planned five nights. Other "drive-up" rooms would not have been so quiet.

  • Liked — It was clean and not very expensive
  • Disliked — It was not within walking distance of any place to eat apart from the attached pub.

“Wow! Great Place to Stay!”

This motel/inn - was excellent. We stayed for 5 nights this summer while attending a motorcycle rally in St John's. I wouldn't hesitate to come back to this inn - we had a great time. As a motorcyclist they are very motorcycle friendly and came recommended by a fellow motorcyclist. What I enjoyed about it - is that there is a courtyard that allows for your bikes, cars to be parked out of the view of passing traffic. It had a cozy feeling and the rooms were spotless! The beds were very comfy and easy on the back. The bathrooms were spotless and had wonderful towels. (There was plenty of hot water which is always a plus.) We were able to park right in front of our room which was a bonus (some rooms are on the second floor of the main part of the building so if you want a courtyard room you must request it). The pub attached to the inn has excellent food and we ate there often when we didn't want to go out. The pub offered traditional British and Newfoundland cuisine. The rooms had laminate floors in the main areas and linoleum in the bathrooms which makes it great if you are an allergy sufferer. The rates were excellent as well by St John's standards. The inn was central to just about everything - and had lots of character. The staff we dealt with were awesome! The cleaning staff were very respectful - and ensured that our rooms were well stocked. The front desk staff were polite and very helpful when asked for assistance. I found the rooms to be really quiet and we did not hear our adjacent room neighbours at any point. We will be returning to this inn the next time we are in St John's.
