First off--do not take the waiting airport taxis, as suggested by the hotel. The airport info desk will place a free call to a much cheaper taxi. I went to St. John's for the late-night live music scene, and thus, to sleep late. The inner room I had reserved was not available when i arrived, and the room I was given was literally a few feet from the bus stop, with buses starting at 6:20 a.m. I was later switched upstairs to the room off of the kitchen, which smelled and sounded like waking in a McDonald's at 7am, babies included. Picture a house that your 90 year old granny buys, and then tries to remodel herself, and then gives up, mid-remodel. The owners drop in 3 times a year from Manitoba. They don't see the poorly functioning tv, the closet doorknob that falls out of the door, the painted over exposed wiring, and so on . The third room I tried in my week-long stay, was very pretty. When the rains came, so did the puddle on the floor of the bathroom. Apparently, the leaks had occurred for years, from the look of the water stains. The staff was great, though they leave early afternoon. Often the front door was left unlocked, and no one mentioned the guest lounge in the adjoining building!! And to add insult to injury, 15% maple syrup. Not even the real stuff.
Room Tip: not in front!

We have reviewed this post with our staff and appreciate the opportunity to respond. Firstly,The Roses is a family owned business run through a Newfoundland based corporation so the ownership is indeed local. We take our guest comments seriously which is why have 15 years of favourable guest comments to fall back on through our guest books in the foyer.
Regrettably we do have the odd guest that is difficult beyond reason and actually threatens to use this and other public forums to make unreasonable demands including but not limited to deep discounts or free accomodation. In this case we offered to find the guest alternate accommodations with a full refund. The offer was refused.
There are no painted wires on the outside of the walls and our glorious 108 year old Inn is in full compliance with all city and fire regulations. The TV's are all new flat screens . We did have a minor leak in a window as a result of a tail end of hurricane Maria but that issue has been addressed. With regard to the airport taxi we confirmed with Krista at the travel desk that our recommendation was indeed more cost effective by $1.00 or so depending on the tip one wishes to offer the driver.
We are disappointed that this guest decided to attack our theme rather than embrace it. Our goal is to provide a down home Newfoundland experience so I guess staying at your 90 year old grannies place is a perfect example of how we try and deliver our eclectic experience and culture. For example, the floors in our kitchen come from reclaimed boats, they are not perfect, but they have many stories behind them.
Our goal will continue to be to provide a down home Newfoundland experience at an affordable price and that last thing you will find at The Roses is fast food and unmemorable cookie-cutter rooms.
