I found this Inn on Trip Advisor and read the reviews. It sounded liike just what we needed. I was planning a trip to Newfoundland for me and my 84-year-old mom. Neither of us had been to St. John's before so we wanted something out of the ordinary, central and special. We got all of this. Our host, Karen, put on terrific breakfast spreads up in the third floor kitchen with the view of the harbour.

We stayed twice so had two differen rooms-Admiral's Cove and Sweet Bay. Admiral's Cove was HUGE with loads of light coming in. The bathroom was a bit pokey and had some quirks with the floor but was fine. Sweet Bay was very nice with a pleasant view of the harbour. It was directly below the "other" kitchen which seems set up solely for great views and to keep everyone's drinks cold.

Newfoundland is not easy to get to from Victoria BC but I definitely plan to go back with my husband and stay at The Roses. When I got home, I found out that a young friend from work had also just returned from Newfoundland, had stayed at The Roses and loved it as well.

Room Tip: Call ahead and chat with Karen. The rooms are very different so best to have a conversation about wh...

“nice but loud”

Enjoyed my stay here, rooms were great. Very clean, loved all the antiques.

My only complaints, cleaning staff outside my room at 10pm complaining about what they have to clean (this happen several nights). They also did some repairs on the main entrance a 1030pm. I would suggest all cleaning and maintenance be completed during the day when most guests are out. Not too nice when you have to get up early in the morning for a conference.

Great breakfast and great building, great location.

Not sure how local the owners are, I was told they are from Toronto.

Really did enjoy my stay other then being kept up a few nights by staff.

Room Tip: The two main floor room are less expensive but you share a bathroom, also next to the entrance. The...

“ABSENTEE INN KEEPERS”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

First off--do not take the waiting airport taxis, as suggested by the hotel. The airport info desk will place a free call to a much cheaper taxi. I went to St. John's for the late-night live music scene, and thus, to sleep late. The inner room I had reserved was not available when i arrived, and the room I was given was literally a few feet from the bus stop, with buses starting at 6:20 a.m. I was later switched upstairs to the room off of the kitchen, which smelled and sounded like waking in a McDonald's at 7am, babies included. Picture a house that your 90 year old granny buys, and then tries to remodel herself, and then gives up, mid-remodel. The owners drop in 3 times a year from Manitoba. They don't see the poorly functioning tv, the closet doorknob that falls out of the door, the painted over exposed wiring, and so on . The third room I tried in my week-long stay, was very pretty. When the rains came, so did the puddle on the floor of the bathroom. Apparently, the leaks had occurred for years, from the look of the water stains. The staff was great, though they leave early afternoon. Often the front door was left unlocked, and no one mentioned the guest lounge in the adjoining building!! And to add insult to injury, 15% maple syrup. Not even the real stuff.

Room Tip: not in front!

We have reviewed this post with our staff and appreciate the opportunity to respond. Firstly,The Roses is a family owned business run through a Newfoundland based corporation so the ownership is indeed local. We take our guest comments seriously which is why have 15 years of favourable guest comments to fall back on through our guest books in the foyer.
Regrettably we do have the odd guest that is difficult beyond reason and actually threatens to use this and other public forums to make unreasonable demands including but not limited to deep discounts or free accomodation. In this case we offered to find the guest alternate accommodations with a full refund. The offer was refused.
There are no painted wires on the outside of the walls and our glorious 108 year old Inn is in full compliance with all city and fire regulations. The TV's are all new flat screens . We did have a minor leak in a window as a result of a tail end of hurricane Maria but that issue has been addressed. With regard to the airport taxi we confirmed with Krista at the travel desk that our recommendation was indeed more cost effective by $1.00 or so depending on the tip one wishes to offer the driver.

We are disappointed that this guest decided to attack our theme rather than embrace it. Our goal is to provide a down home Newfoundland experience so I guess staying at your 90 year old grannies place is a perfect example of how we try and deliver our eclectic experience and culture. For example, the floors in our kitchen come from reclaimed boats, they are not perfect, but they have many stories behind them.
Our goal will continue to be to provide a down home Newfoundland experience at an affordable price and that last thing you will find at The Roses is fast food and unmemorable cookie-cutter rooms.

“Good View of The harbour”

This is a very popular B&B located in downtown St. John's. The rooms are spacious and well appointed and en suite was very large. This establishment is basically two row houses that have been renovated and serve as one B&B. Breakfast is served on the top floor of one side so if you are staying on the other side you must go outside to go to breakfast. Both sides are three stories high so if you have problems with stairs or carring your luggage up stairs book one of the ground floor rooms however you will still have to climb one set of stairs to go to breakfast. There is no 24 hour reserved parking( parking permits for the church across the street are only good from 1600 hrs to 0800 hrs the next morning) but 24 hour street parking is easy to find just up the street.

“Got me hooked on BnB's”

This was my first time at a BnB, as it was the only room we could get during the George St Festival. What a great experience! We had a huge room, located within walking distance to everything we wanted to see. Breakfast was spent with great people and amazing view, all at a price we would have paid at a regular hotel without the home cooked breakfast. Thank you to The Roses, you got me hooked on BnB's now.
