“Time for renovation.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed one night, but won't return unless a renovation happens. The furnishings and building are shop-worn...almost creepy on the rainy evening we arrived. No staff stay through the night making it seem all the more like an old movie (think Boris Karloff and a giant old house with expected noises). Parking is limited. Evening host was friendly, but no computer access after she left at 8 pm. Her directions to restaurants were sketchy and we wandered until we found something. It is always hard to tell if a room is truly clean when it is so old, but the bedding was old, too (yuk). What tips the scale from Poor to Average was the magnificent breakfast! The morning host couldn't have been nicer and breakfast was regally served...it was hot and absolutely delicious!!

Mary,

Thank you for your input, we do value it. We are the new owners as of late August, and shared similar opinions as yours. You will be glad to know that we have indeed started renovations! Since you have stayed back in September, all of the bedding has been replaced with luxurious crisp white duvets and linens. Also, we do now have a staff member available throughout the night, all you have to do is dial 0 to reach them for any questions/ concerns you may have. Painting and new furnishings have been completed in the lobby area. Please stay tuned to Facebook and our webpage to keep track of further ongoing improvements.

“Warm Victorian Atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

We stayed for two nights here in the Master Suite. It was awesome. It was a great romantic experience for both of us.

The Hot Tub was great and fit both of us. After that, we lounged out in front of the faux fire place with a great deal of comfort and relaxation. Warm, quiet, romantic.

The room and the property are beautifully done. I've read some things about the renovations; but as of November 11, they looked mostly finished to me.

The water pressure in the shower was a little bit weak, but I prefer a hot tub anyway. We basically just had hot tubs the whole two nights we stayed there.

The breakfast was great. The staff was friendly and helpful. They supplied us with towels and logs every night.

I've read some things about the location being a bit of a walk. It is quite a walk from downtown; but we had a car. Actually, if you are going to NFLD for any reason, I recommend renting a car. It's not a very public transport friendly city / province from what I could tell. Anyway, I was happy to have a car. But, in case you'd like to tie one on in the city, you could walk back here if you wanted very easily.

I would recommend this place to my friend. It was quiet, secluded, romantic, and with a hot tub - exactly what we wanted. Newfoundland is a great destination for a quiet, quick holiday; and this is a great B and B to have it.

Room Tip: I chose the master suite which was very nice - especially if you like hot tubs!

“Warm and Comfy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

Only had one night there but have absolutely no complaints. Would probably stay there again if and when we return to NFLD. Had the Green Room. It was clean and well appointed. Had to leave before breakfast so cannot comment on that. Would not hesitate to recommend it for those looking for a bed and breakfast.

“Victorian charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We had the Gold room!!!....the B&B used to be the mansion of a millionaire, we were told by one guest.

The entry hallway was huge, 10 X 30. We made use of the living room, very spacious; enjoyed good conversions with other guests and watched some TV.

Our room was carpeted and very comfortable. All but 1 room had en-suite bathrooms, ours did.

The room and the entire property had a Victorian feel...the exterior is in need of some repairs...I am sure the new owners are aware.

The other B in B&B was also excellent, Denise always had that warm NL smile. Her breakfasts were yummy, and included fruits, yorgurts, toast with all the usual trimmings.

On one of the evenings we enjoyed wine and cheese on the front deck as the sun escaped behind the fully grown trees on the property. Immaculate, front deck and exterior needs to be spruced up.

I will definitely stay here again..maybe in one of the bigger rooms...oh, there is also a library with PC station for internet/emails/research, lots of books and movies.

About 20-30mins walk from downtown, George street, etc.

Room Tip: All room were immaculate and full of charm.

“Ok, nothing exceptional”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

We booked the Master Suite as a treat but probably should have chosen a different room to save money. The room was ok, but older decor, bed was not very comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was terrible. I'm not really a jacuzzi type so really this was not worth the money for me.
We stayed in a smaller room the last night which was quite nice, bathroom across the hall was not a problem and the water pressure in the shower was much better.
However, the staff were excellent, the breakfasts very good.
Also, visitors should know this place is quite a walk to downtown, so we took the bus or taxi quite often.
All in all, it was ok, but we should have saved our money and booked a cheaper room.

Room Tip: Pick one of the less expensive rooms unless you love jacuzzis.
