Having spent the previous five days at inns, we were looking forward to staying in a more welcoming and friendly atmosphere and Elaine's didn't disappoint.
The B&B is ideally located, approximately 40 minutes from St. John’s airport and at the beginning of the Irish Loop. The main road through Witless Bay can be busy at times, but the house is situated well away from the traffic noise and offers a stunning view of the bay. You can even view the house and property using Google Street View.
After a warm greeting from Elaine, we dropped our bags in the room and headed to the dock where her son Tyler took us out in a zodiac to see the whales and the birds (lots of puffins!) - a trip not to be missed and another in a long line of highlights of our first trip to Newfoundland.
There is a lounge for the use of the guests and is a cozy place to relax at the end of the day with a book or laptop (no problems connecting to their complementary wi-fi).
Our room was spacious and well appointed and we slept soundly on the queen sized bed. Rooms have ensuite baths with the exception of one that has a private bath.
Waking up to the view of the water and the smell of breakfast cooking was a wonderful way to start the day. Breakfasts are at a long table in a bright room with a view of the bay. We met travelers from Colorado, Australia, England, Nova Scotia and Ontario and it was great fun to compare notes of the previous days’ adventures and discuss our plans for the day.
At breakfast, Elaine’s quick wit and humour kept us laughing and the variety of food kept us busy trying to decide what to have next. Along with a cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast, there were homemade muffins, fresh fruit, an assortment of cereals, yogurts, and a selection of Elaine’s own jams and preserves (including partridgeberry). Plus of course, juice, tea, and coffee.
We are already planning our next trip to Newfoundland and will begin and end our holiday with stays at this exceptional bed and breakfast. Can’t wait to go back!
