“Wedding reception: good time was had by all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

On Sept 26/09 we had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Courtenay Bay Inn. While we were aware (after giving our downpayment) of some issued that apparently had occurred at a previous event, we didn't have any problems. With, of course, the exception of the elevator being out of order on this particular day.
The staff was very courteous, friendly and very speedy at the reception.
The food was hot, plentiful and delicous.
I would definitely recommend this facility for a wedding reception.
The rooms were acceptable, especially for the price that was charged. We, of course, had our room free of charge as part of the reception package. My children stayed in one of the other guest rooms and it seemed to be fine, clean and the kids had no complaints.
The decor is a little dated, but that wasn't an issue for us. The bed was comfy, the sheets were clean, and the rooms were nice.

“One to be missed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2009

Thankfully our stay at this hotel was only one night. It is in a dilapidated area of ST Johns and it fits its surroundings. The towels, whilst clean were only fit to dry the family dog. The coffeee machine was still full of the previous occupants coffee and the hair dryer had to be replacd ( it took three goes to find one that worked. The restaurant had been closed for three weeks for "cleaning". It was still below par. The swimming pool appeared to be out of order. We were not sure whether the hotel was due to be refurbished or demolished. The latter would be the best bet

“Just for one night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2009

We stayed there for one night(Aug.3rd).The sercice was great.Trevor at the front desk was very helpful and pleasant. We had free internet access and fridge and microwave in the room. The beds were comfortable and room was spacious.Area wasn't so good and the pool could be cleaner, but for the price(78$ per night) it was OK.The decor is oldfashioned, but if you use hotel just to sleep in it,who cares??!!!The bathroom needs extra coat of paint, but it was clean. It is a short drive to the food store and the city, and that was also important to us.Just for the night it is not bad.

“Never stay here - Windows don't open, no fresh air, moldy rooms.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2009

I had an asthma attack staying here, and I am not asthmatic. The windows do not open - the front desk said they are "suicide windows", so they are not allowed to open. No matter what floor you stay on.

The whole room stank of mold and smoke. The pillows - gawd, they smelled. Thank God I had my own in my car.The bathroom - mold all over the shower ceiling (no fan).

If you want something soooo much better and do not want to die of an asthma attack, choose the colonial. Same price. And you can get fresh air !

The front desk person was nice a nice man, but that was the only good thing.

“Disgusting and rotten”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 April 2009

-I just recently booked 2 nights at this hotel, through online booking. Yes it was the cheapest rate of St. John, not expecting the best, but most definately not expecting what we got!!!
-We arrive at the hotel thinking we were at the wrong spot, the building on the outside looks like a high school transformed into a hotel. Oh well it can't be that bad....so I thought.
-We get checked in and head to our room, the building smells like an old persons retirement building, old death or something. Our room was on the 4th floor, I must say it was much bigger than what we expected, sleigh bed and all, not bad.....wait a min theres no sink in the bathroom...oh no its over here....the bathroom was split into 2 spaces. The tub and toilet was in a room and across where you would expect to see a closet there is a sink and mirror haha, very bizzare. oh well it can't be that bad, only 2 nights.
-we are chilling in the room and we decide to look for a mall so we go through the hotel binder....we get to a tab called "hotel safety". Who needs to have a whole page write up of things such as....."do not let strangers into your room" ....."if a person comes to your door claiming to be a hotel employee, call the front desk first to see if its legit"..."do not wear expensive jewellry to draw attention to yourself"....."do not leave valuables in your car"....."if you see any suspicious activity, please report to front desk."......we are starting to think we are in the ghetto or something.
-things are fine except later on some hotel guests next door to us start fighting (boyfriend/girlfriend) they are pretty loud and we hear someone say you better clean up all this blood!! so we stay in our room with a chair up against the door!! this goes on most of the night until 1 in the morning, the police show up twice, the second time they arrest the gf and take the bf to the hospital because he is bleeding so bad that they worry for his safety, and the gf apparently was cutting herself. we hear the cleaning ppl the next day say "when you go in there check every crack for splattered blood". Who knows how often this happens and I really wouldnt trust that they would clean that up properly!
-the front desk did nothing in my favor but take 20 of my night of stay, we checked out the next morning, and the hotel manager seemed cranky that I was even complaining about the room and wanting the night for free. THEY DIDNT EVEN SAY SORRY !!
-it seems like alot of construction workers and men stay there, dirty men that hit on you in disgusting ways. I would never stay here ever again, I truley believe that this hotel should be torn down, its worthless.
-free breakfast included cold eggs and soggy toast, nothing good at all about this place!! NEVER STAY HERE!
