My wife booked the St. James as a surprise weekend getaway for my birthday. The property is small but the rooms have a modern design and are very nicely decorated. The floors have hardwood and tile unlike the carpet you find in most hotels. We had the "master suite", which has separate sitting and bedroom areas. There is a large tub and separate large tile shower. The room has two 42" plasma TVs with DVD players and digital cable. The bed was king size and very comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located in downtown Moncton and is within walking distance of a number of bars and restaurants.
Our main complaint with this hotel is the noise. The hotel occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. There is a bar on the first floor, which seems to be affiliated with the hotel as it shares the same name. Some other reviewers mentioned being able to hear the noise from the bar, so we made sure we booked a room on the third floor. Unfortunately, the night we stayed there was a band playing in the bar and we could hear the band from our room two floors above. It wasn't super loud but it was noticeable. I cannot imagine what the noise must have been like for anyone with a room on the 2nd floor. The hotel should invest in better soundproofing or refrain from having live bands play.
The St. James bar is an upscale establishment and is very nicely decorated. We had a couple of drinks at the bar but did not try their food. The bar advertises 20 premium beers on tap but I do not consider Coors Lite and Bud Lite "premium". I would say that there were no more than six beers on their menu I would class as "premium".
If you have a problem with stairs, this is not the hotel for you. There is no elevator and the flight of stairs from the street to the hotel lobby is pretty steep. It actually made carrying the luggage up a little difficult.
One of the sofas in our room was broke (it sloped down on one side) and there was a rip in one of the cushions. This isn't something I would expect from a $300 a night room.
Another odd thing I thought I should mention is that there is a glass wall between the bathroom and the bedroom. This means that you don't have any privacy while taking a shower or using the toilet if someone is in the bedroom. While this didn't bother us, I thought I should mention it in case it presented a problem for anyone considering this hotel.
This is a truly unique property that offers a lot of extras. If the noise problem isn't an issue for you, I would highly recommend this hotel. If it wasn't for the noise and the broken sofa, I would have rated this hotel a 5.
