I have been to this hostel twice and I can say that the ongoing renovations have totally transformed the place!
For me, kitchens are always a big factor when deciding to book a hostel. Needless to say that cooking your own meals makes budget traveling possible. The Winnipeg hostel now has a really nice fully stocked self-catering kitchen. The cafeteria is currently closed while being renovated. Hopefully, they will continue to offer breakfasts at a minimum cost once reopened.
I have stayed in both the private rooms and the dorms. The rooms are quite nice, but it is definitely worth the cost staying in the dorms. The dorms are spacious and roomy, and, best of all, soundproof because of the concrete walls.
The hostel itself is well located; it is a few minutes away from the shopping district and a few key attractions like the Winnipeg Art Gallery (Wag), the Legislative building and the University. You will need to hop on a bus to get to St-Boniface and to the historical Forks district. There are also a few nice pubs in the area, although I would be cautious about walking around alone at night. The pub located in the hostel offered some very good local music, I do recommend it.
Staff was also very friendly and (tried to be) helpful. It seems many of the staff are in fact international students on a working visa. This meant that they did not know the city that well, but that was a minimal issue. The provided tourist maps are more than enough to get you everywhere you would want to go.
