“Stay away from this hotel”

I'm not a complainer but this is definitely an exception! When I arrived to check in, I had to wait almost 25 minutes and there were only 2 people in front of me. The frontdesk person was a few days new and still didn't know how to check someone in. Also he spoke very poor english and would walk away while you were asking him a question. I finally checked in and went to my room. My keycard didn't work. I had to walk all the way back with my heavy suitcase. After waiting another 15-20 minutes, I got another keycard. I check into my room and inspect the bed for bedbugs and then the bathroom to see if it was clean. It wasn't. There was hair on the toilet seat, hair on the coldwater tap and more hair in the bathtub. Plus the rug sort of smelled of mold or something old and there was many stains. I went back to the front desk and thank goodness, noone is in front of me. I told the man I wanted a different room, (I explained the above) and he said no, he can't do that. I said I wasn't staying in that room and that I was paying so much for a decent room and I wasn't getting my money's worth. I asked to speak to the manager and was informed there was no manager. I then asked to speak to the owner and the frontdesk man who barely understood english replied the owner was away. Finally a maid came by and I told her to help me and I explained to her what happened. She said, "Well. What you pay for the hotel room is what you get." (I paid roughly $140.00 for 2 nights). In the end, they finally agreed to change me to another room but they never forgot my complaint because over the next 2 days, my keycard did'nt work 3 times.
(The place is full of dodgy tenants and rude staff. If your on a very tight budget, stay at a backpacker's hostel because this place isn't worth paying for even $5.00)

“Terrible”

Staff was extremely rude and unaccomodating. You have to put 30.00$ down for every key to your room. I do not reccommend this place. It is also in a very shabby, rough, part of downtown Winnipeg.

“Good, for the price.”

Considering the price, I found the Thriftlodge to be very clean, and the staff friendly. At $50 or less per night for double occupancy, you certainly can't expect the Ritz or any such thing. It's a good hotel, if you're on a budget.

“Dive”

We made an online reservation at the Thriftlodge. When making the reservation we were a little concerned that there was no picture of the hotel online. When we arrived at about 3:30 pm we were quite uncomfortable with the neighbourood noting several rough characters outside the hotel. Our room was on the second floor. On our way to the room we noticed three housekeeping carts heaped to the top with beer bottles in our hallway. The room was clean. The only flaw with the room was that that a tear in the bedspead was sewn together. On the way back to the lobby we noticed that someone had spat mucousy spit on the steps. We decided we would not stay at the hotel and went to the desk.
The person from the back said we would have to pay for one night due to the cancellation rule. One employee from the front in an accusing tone questioned us about why we did not want to stay there. We haved stayed at low cost hotels before but never had an experience like this.
