“Very nice helpful staff but it is a rough hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed here one night for business when most other hotels were booked. I had heard about this hotel but knowing it was just one night I was not too concerned. My flight was late and when I arrived at the hotel the police were escorting people out and there were many security guards around the lobby area. It was a hocky night so in fairness maybe people were a bit more rambunctious than usual but I am not so sure it is not the norm for this place. This hotel is rough starting from the lobby all the way through. The elevators are old. The hallways are old...beer bottles around, few signs. To say I felt 100% safe is a bit of a stretch. As I made my way to my room I was concerned what I might run in to especially as a female travelling alone, so I was moving quite quickly. To put this in perspective I have worked in enforcement and am quite confident in my ability to defend myself and still felt ill at ease. In fairness my room was ok, bed comfortable, TV fine, bathtub was ok, counter and toilet space was very tight. The hotel served breakfast and you had a choice from the menu. The fact that it did not include the tea or coffee I found strange but I figure it was a way to try and ensure to get a bit of a tip. On the positive side I found the hotel staff very helpful, friendly and they did go out of their way to help me with some questions I had. I cannot stay this would top my list if I returned or that I can really recommend it to most people. I feel bad saying that because of how nice the staff were however I like many others rely on this site for honest reviews and so there you have it.

“Please renovate this historic hotel....................................”

Historic buildings have always been of interest to me so while on a 3 day trip to wpg i thought the marlborough hotel might just be a neat place to stay..although i did read some reviews i decided to leave it up to my own discretion and go ahead as the hotel was in the vicicnity of the places i was there to go to...first let me say the hotel looks from the outside so historic and the staff were very accomadating and polite..lunch in the restaurant was good, the beautifully cared for stained glass windows and historic walls and carvings made it a historic experience...Thats where it all ended. When entering the rooms i was a bit surprised to see that the entire room was seriously dated and in need of an entire reno.Although im sure the cleaning staff tried their hardest to clean it as well as the were able to but seriously they were very limited in what they could do.Starting with the beds although not bad for comfort the sheets and blankets were threadbare and had cigarette holes in them.comforters and shams were discarded immediaetly as they were too scarey to sleep with. The heater was so loud that i felt i was sleeping in a truck or that there was construction going on inside the room, so needless to say had to be turned off to sleep and then brrrr no thick blankets to keep warm. The bathroom was needless to say old crumbling and soooooo dated. The water taps didnt work right. The rugs were dark but had to wear shoes for fear of what was on there.Worst of all was in the morning waking up full of big red welts.Itchy red bumps aquired throughout the night..Each morning i awoke with more and by the time i left i had huge giant red itchy welts on my body..I could only come to one conclusion on that one..I did think the prices were fair before checking in but afterwards would have definitely paid alot more for a cleaner more up to date hotel..So there you go wont do that again and can only hope these ugly red welts will go away.Maybe some antibiotics will do the trick as i am just heading out the door to the dr to have them treated............Enter at your own risk........i did....and lived to regret it...

Room Tip: i have no tips for them

“Avoid.”

From the homeless people in the front enterance to the maze to get to the room this was by far the worst hotel I have ever heard of. Paid extra to receive free parking and a queen suite only to arrive and find out there is no parking avialable. Staff offered to reimburse us for parking which was nice. Room was dirty the tv cords were hanging off he wall into an outlet that had no cover on it, couch had brown stains on it and it looked like something from the basement of a college frat house. We dropped our bags off went out on the town and then grabbbed our stuff and took a cab to the holiday in at midnight because we refused to stay in that dirt infested room. I wouldnt even let my dogs stay in a place like that. I have travelled many times across the world and have never seen anything quite like this. Please take my advice and the advice of some of the other posts STAY AWAY.

Room Tip: Call the Holiday Inn

I would like to say that u will not find better meals in a hotel then the marlborough ,the hotel is owned by a cheap a..hole but managed by a classy guest orientated man with many years of experience. I'm glad to see the front desk has filtered out the hung over crabby women of the past . The marlborough hotel is not the the radisson or the hilton but be assured ur room will be clean , towels fresh and the manager will always accommodate you. I can't wait for the owner of this hotel to sell , so much potential and he is just not growing with winnipeg. Mike, keep up the great work!

Dear Past Guest,

Thank you very much for choosing The Marlborough Hotel during your visit to Winnipeg and for taking the time to share your positive views about our food, our House Keeping service and hotel Management.

Just some notes about the progress and future plans of the Marlborough Hotel:
Over the past numerous years most areas of the hotel have seen refurbishment and we continue to maintain a program of upgrading. Within the last two years, for example, over 90% of our beds were replaced with new Simmons pillow-top mattress sets and over $350,000 was spent in redecoration of our 8th Floor Lobby, our famous Skyview Ballroom and Marlborough Hall.
We are in the process of developing our new addition of the Business Floor located on the 4th floor of the hotel with new furniture, duvets, flat screens TV, key card security access and many more other amenities. Also other areas of our upgrading program are the remaining hotel guest room with new tubs, new and efficient shower’s heads, and new curved shower curtains for a more spacious shower area, new drapes, valence and sheers a total investment of over $500.000
made by our cheap a..hole.

We are an historic building were many of our Standard guestrooms are smaller than in today’s newer hotels, but most guests tell us they offer good value.
Our Superior rooms, on the other hand, are among the largest regular hotel rooms in the city.

We believe we are downtown Winnipeg’s leading full service hotel for price conscious visitors.

On behalf of our whole team, thank you once again for your kind comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to Winnipeg and to The Marlborough Hotel.
Also as per you statement seen how you are so proficient and knowledgeable, the cheap a..hole would consider any reasonable offer.

Sincerely,

Mike Episcopo

“NOT SAFE! Bullet hole in room”

Hello,

As a hotel manager myself I have never posted any negative feed back on trip advisor but I feel that people need to know what is going on in this hotel.
I understand that there is a bit of a rough crowd that is staying throughout the city of Winnipeg but the quality of rooms is apsolutly disgusting.
From burnt blankets, dirty floor, Broken bathroom window, shower did not work, mass amounts of paint falling of the walls to the bullet hole in the window. As you will see in the picture I have debated on bringing this to the press. You will see an ovbiouse bullet hole in the window with what appears to be blood. This room was sold to us with the hotel explaining before we got to the room that there was a maintenance issue. I have never ever heard of this and I have worked in the hotel industry my whole life.

General Manager Response:

Dear Not Safe,

Thank you very much for choosing The Marlborough Hotel during your visit to Winnipeg.
Let me start by saying that I’m very disturbed at the fact that Trip Advisor posted this review without a proper investigation and even more disturbed at the fact that your review about the hotel selling you a room as you stated with an obvious bullet hole in the window and what appeared to be blood on the window ledge is completely wrong and false.
These are the facts: The night of November 5th guests in this room had an argument escalating to a point that one of them threw a small bottle of red nail polish at the other person, but missed and hit the window instead splashing the red nail polish liquid onto the window ledge.
Let me assure you that my investigation shows that this room was noted as out of order on the morning of November 6th, (after the guests were evicted for disturbance and charged for damage to the broken window) and not booked to any other guest until November 15th (Key-card report available). On November 16th the room was put back onto our inventory list and we have records of our guest’s folio to confirm this investigation.

Also, the mass amount of paint falling from the wall is a 2x5 inch gap of chipped wall along the right side of the door frame, likely caused the same night of the 5th.
You also stated that there was a broken bathroom window. This is also likely false, as most of the bathrooms in the hotel have no windows and this room in particular definitely has no window.

Let me assure you again, nobody was in that room from November 5th through to November 15th. Therefore, the only person able to snap that picture was the evicted guest that caused the damage.

I encourage you to take your photo and your version of this story to the media. We have enough reports to confirm the truth. If I was in your position - as a hotel manager myself, I would have complained about the state of the room to the front desk ASAP and immediately ask for the hotel Manager to discuss my findings. We have no record of anyone complaining about having a bullet hole in their window and blood in their room.

My conclusion is that the photo posted on Trip Advisor was taken by the same person that was the registered guest in that room that night and the same person that posted this review. It is unfortunate that in this business we are at the mercy of tools such as these which can be used to compromise the reputation of hotels where management and staff are dedicated to exceeding our guest’s expectations.

Sincerely,

Mike Episcopo
