“Basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2007

We stayed here for four nights as part of a Polar Bear tour. The room was basic to say the least - two single beds, no hairdryer, dodgy décor in green, small bathroom in turquoise. The views from our window comprised an unfinished extension to the back of the motel and a wasteland with disused trailers. However, it was clean and, most importantly, warm. We ate in the restaurant as part of the package, and the food, served as a hot buffet, was poor. The buffet breakfasts weren’t very good either, but quality of food seems to be a Churchill problem because of the location.
However, we did see loads of Polar Bears and the Northern Lights, which made up for everything else!

The Churchill Motel is a friendly, busy base which accommodates travellers visiting Churchill to watch Polar Bears in their natural environment. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and the food is quite good.

For all of those who are in a wheel chair, Churchill is an amazing place to be. It is easy accessible and if not the people go out of there way to help. The Churchill Motel is easy to get into and out of with their chair ramp. the rooms are big enough for your wheel chair to easily get into. My client was more then pleased with her adventure to the north. Thank you to the excellent staf there they made our stay wonderful. again if you are planing a trip Go don't say oh i can't cause i am in a chair you would be surprised. don't miss out.

  • Liked — The location and that it was wheel chair accessable
  • Disliked — they didn't have a room that was totally accessible. ie... roll in shower. but was recommended

“Great Polar Bear experience”

We arrived at the Churchill Motel from the UK on our Polar Bear adventure in early November via a UK travel company.
We didnt know what to expect coming into a town like Churchill with its close knit community.
What we found was a lovely motel all on one level so ideal for those with disabilities etc. The owners were lovely friendly helpful people, the rooms were clean and tidy and provided what we needed for our stay but the bath towels could be bigger. The eating area was also clean and well layed out with helpful staff offering good food and drink.
I was very pleased with the motel which provided all that we needed from a base point of view while we got down to the Polar Bear spotting that we came for.

  • Liked — all one level- one long coridor- good doors to keep polar bears out !
  • Disliked — small towels
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask lady at front desk for help- she was very helpful

“Cosy, frontier-style”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2006

First let me say that if you are planning to stay in Churchill during October/early November you had better book really early as this is the peak (and only) tourist season in Churchill when everyone wants to see the polar bears. There are not many places to choose from but we were perfectly satisfied with the Churchill Motel. The rooms were clean, warm and comfortable, if basic and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food was hot and filling. but based on the meals we had included in our package, we decided to eat out on the other nights. The major problem from our point of view was the lack of an alcohol licence. When we are on holiday, part of the pleasure of eating out is a glass (or three) of wine. Not all the eateries in Churchill are licensed so it's worth checking before you book (and you do need to book tables in October as well). The restaurant opposite the Motel (can't remember the name) is licensed and the food is pretty good, especially the arctic char. I would also recommend Gypsy's Bakery (licensed).

All in all, we had a great stay. The people are great, the scenery is stark but strangely beautiful and the wildlife is fantastic. You would very unlucky not to see lots and lots of polar bears, and probably arctic foxes, arctic hares and plenty of birds as well.

  • Liked — Friendly, comfortable and great location for wildlife watching
  • Disliked — No liquor licence and slow service in restaurant
  • Tips/Secrets — Book early if you want to stay in Churchill during bear watching season
