“Cozy, clean and affordable”

I had no idea what to expect during my stay in Churchill, but the warm and cozy atmosphere at the Bear Country Inn was incredible. My room was small but clean and the bed was extremely comfortable (the best hotel bed I can remember, actually, and I've slept in a few!) The breakfast and snacks were a very nice touch. Stay here!

“Would highly recommend!”

Churchill is not a cheap destination but I found the Country Bear Inn's rates pleasantly reasonable. Even better, they offer a good sized breakfast with snacks available throughout the day (bagels, popcorn, yogurts, trail mix, fruit, cereal, cream cheese, coffee, tea etc). The rooms were spotless and I really liked the linens. Set your expectations appropriately though, you are in Churchill, so don't expect marble in the bathrooms or hardwood floors. Likewise for cable tv. There is wireless internet though. I was very appreciative of the airport shuttle and even more so of the friendly staff and manager! They helped me book my tours and recommended a flight tour that I will never forget! there is also a nice common room in which to meet other travellers.

“Awesome!!!!!!!!”

We had not made reservations. When we arrived Katherine and Amy were picking up two other couples. We asked them if they had room and they said yes.
We stayed 3 days and two nights with them. We were treated like family. We learned a lot about Churchill and themselves.
They made our reservations for the Old Fort tour and Beluga whales trip. We saw Polar Bears, Beluga Whales,a Artic Hare. It was far more than we expected.
On the last day we were treated by Amy to the old plane wreckage and Cape Merry.
We just want to say a true THANK YOU.

“Convenient Location, Cosy & Clean inn on main street - Nov 2009”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2009

The Bear Country Inn is on the main street in Churchill and very convenient for all shops and restaurants. We received a friendly welcome from Michelle but after checking in did not see our hosts again. The room was small and basic but we were not expecting luxury accommodation on the tundra. The bed was comfortable and the heating very efficient. The bathroom was small, clean and only had a shower. Come prepared with your own hairdryer etc. There are no facilities for making drinks in the room and no phone (but there is one in the lobby). You'll get no mobile signal in Churchill either.

Breakfast was pretty limited but we enjoyed the cooked buffet breakfast across the road at Northern Lights (that was an alternative option offered as part of our tour package) very much.

Polar bears in town are a nightly occurence and you need to take your own security very seriously. We had polar bear footprints outside our bedroom window one night.

There are no eveining meals or liquour licence at the Bear Country Inn but we found plenty of places to eat in town. Gypsy's Bakery provided a great luch in town and on the tundra buggy, with great pastries too. Northern Lights provided a very good eveing meal. Our welcome and farewell dinners at the Seaport Hotel were completely acceptable althought the ambience was rather lacking. As everything has to be flown or railroaded in groceries and restaurants are NOT cheap. It doesn't break the bank but don't expect cheap either.

Rumour has it the Lazy Bear Lodge is the best place to stay in town. However the Bear Country Inn was perfectly fine for what we needed. After all you are here for the Polar Bears and other wildlife.

The tundra buggy tours were fabulous with a wealth of bears and other wildlife. Paul Ratson is a fantastic naturalist. Try to use the toilet before getting on the buggy so you use it as little as possible during the day - it is basic and standards drop as the day progresses.

Dog sledding with Dave Daley of Wapusk Adventures is a "Must Do". The Iditamile experience is fantastic with just two of you in the sled with the musher and Dave's stories are legendary.

Seeing the polar bears in the wild was a lifetime's ambition for me and at the top of my "bucket list". The trip with Great Canadian Travel met and exceeded my expectations. I am still pinching myself that I saw what I saw. I'd go back like a shot, finances allowing. Perfection!

“Bear Country Inn-July 2009”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2009

The hotel rooms, and beds are small, but the stay was quite enjoyable. The Bear Country Inn is owned and operated by Michelle Beaton (who is more than just a piece of eye candy), with lots of help from her significant other Sheldon, their daughter whose name I can't remember at the present moment, and their 3 dogs, Seth, Macey, and I forget the 3rd one's name. This place is by no means like the Super 8 in The Pas, or one of those fancy places I could never afford, but for most people who visit Churchill for either work, or to see the bears and whales, or just visit relatives, it has everything you need. And it's much better then HBR's camp cars, or their houses in Herchmer. There's no kitchenette, but Michelle gladly let us use her barbecue, and my co-worker brought a hot plate, and she gave us a place to set it up. Because we were repeat customers, she went to the effort of having food for us when we arrived. And even when I staggered in drunk after an evening of partying with the guys, she didn't complain as long as I didn't trash the place. There is housekeeping almost daily, even if Michelle has to do it herself. Sheldon is also quite knowledgable about what to see and do in Churchill, and will give you good directions. There's a continental breakfast and coffee in a lounge area every morning. Microwave in the lounge area for customer use. There's no phones in the rooms, but a pay phone in the lobby, and calling cards for sale are available. Dogs are always welcome. Laundry facilities available for $5/load including detergent and fabric softener. If there's a problem with the room, let them know, and they get it fixed right away. Free Parking available not that you need it. The Inn is walking distance to the grocery store, many restaraunts, Home Hardware, and pretty much anywhere you need to go in town. Customer shuttle service to and from the airport and Via station. I'm not what the rates are, because my work paid for it. The rooms also come with a small tv with basic cable, a mini fridge, a fan, and small washroom with toilet, sink, and shower. I don't think I left anything out.
