My mom & I stayed at the Polar Inn as our base for taking Great White Bear Tours out on the tundra to watch the bears. The proprietors are extremely nice and friendly. The inn is nothing fancy, but it's centrally located, which makes a difference when you're walking back from dinner in bitterly cold winds. LOVE the free WiFi (one of my must-haves). Breakfast was really nice - the waffle maker was our fave, yoghurt and fresh fruit was awesome, too.
They have a nice gift shop and even sell stamps (including international). The post office isn't too far away (it's next to the liquor store), but the post office wanted us to purchase entire books of stamps - it was nice of the inn to offer them individually.
Mom did all the arranging and she didn't book a package - she saved quite a lot of money by booking our hotel, airfare and Great White Bear tours a la carte. Just be sure to book well in advance. (She booked in April for a November visit.)
My only gripe (and this seemed prevalent throughout Churchill) was that there is so much waste created that can be avoided - styrofoam plates and cups (styrofoam NEVER breaks down), plastic utensils, etc. Churchill is in the middle of nowhere, and although they do have a recycling facility on the edge of town, getting anything in or out of town is a big process. Sending all that waste to a dump seems criminal. Installing a dish washer and providing reusable dinnerware seems so much smarter and more earth-friendly.
