We spent a week at Tyndall Stone Lodge in the Lower Village in Whister in late June 2011 compliments of a relatives who couldn’t use their week this year . It was our first time staying in Whistler, and overall it was a very enjoyable family week.
Check-in went very smoothly for us. The people doing the check-in and out were pleasant and helpful. Our assigned underground parking stall, like others in the parking garage, was very small. The parking is secure (key access needed to get to the parking area).
Our two-bedroom unit (#213) overlooked the Village Stroll and 2010 Olympic area and we could see the Olympic and Paralympic rings, Olympic cauldron, medal stage, etc. There is a really nice looking new children’s play area that was being completed while we were there. It is very close to the hospital as well. It is at the quieter end of the Village Stroll – which can be a positive or a negative thing, depending on how much night life you like. It is close to David’s Tea and Starbucks, along with several other shops.
It is apparent that most items in the condo unit had been upgraded over the years although the cabinetry had not been upgraded and was very, very worn (gouges, pieces of countertop missing) as well as dated-looking. Some of the floor tiles in the kitchen were loose. Overall, the condo was fairly clean although not “to the corners” clean, especially in the bathrooms. Other general comments about the amenities are as follow: There was no cutting board to use in the kitchen. There was a clock-radio in only one of the two bedrooms. The fans came in handy (one in each bedroom) as the portable air conditioning unit was located in the living area and did not keep the entire condo cool enough during warm summer weather. The bedrooms are quite small, and there are no dressers or any furniture for clothing; however, there is wire shelving (one long upper shelf and a vertical row of smaller shelves) inside the bedroom closets. The walls, floors, and windows are not at all soundproof, so we heard a lot of noise during our stay. There is a phone number (info is in the condo) to call if there is excessive, late hour noise (but we didn’t see it until the next day after what sounded like an all night relay race in the hallway above us so we didn’t use the number so cannot comment on its effectiveness). A major inconvenience in the kitchen is that there is no place to hang a hand towel near the sink nor a place to hang tea towels; there are no hooks, rods, etc. and the stove didn’t have a handle that allows towels to hang from. Similarly, the bathrooms have no place by the sinks to hang a hand towel. There was a good supply of towels for the three of us. The info in the condo says number of towels are stocked for the maximum number of occupants and if more towels are needed, there is a $25 charge. The deck off the living area was on the small side and had two plastic chairs and a small table; it was adequate in size to sit or stand on while having a morning coffee.
A “welcome basket” contained a single package of ground coffee, four tea bags, and a single use box of Tide laundry detergent. There were four or five dishwasher tablets for use for the week (which was fine as we didn’t use the dishwasher every day). Coffee filters are provided. The only condiments supplied are salt and pepper. There is a good selection of kitchen appliances and utensils (but no cutting board as previously mentioned).
We encountered an issue with getting wireless Internet access. The password is on the router in each room but the one on the router in our condo had partially worn away so it was not legible enough even with guessing some of the missing numbers. Since it was evening, we had to wait until the next day to call to get the password. Hopefully this has been rectified to avoid future inconveniences. The information about Internet access in the book in the condo unit is outdated as it refers to wired access.
All-in-all, despite it being an older building, with its good location and fairly good amenities in the suite, we were satisfied with our stay and would stay there again. Since relatives lent us their week, we did not have to pay to stay there, but I have tried to be as unbiased as possible in this review.
Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the Village Stroll (instead of the street) are probably a bit noisier but the...
