“Stay elsewhere”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2010

Hotel room had 2 beds as requested, but no dresser or other enclosed furniture in which to put clothing. Closet had no door and was about 6 inches wide. There were 2 high open shelves with extra pillows and other items on them, which we removed to use to place our clothing. There was one chair in the room and a large table/desk with no drawers. A/C was a window box unit. TV was a 15 inch set on stand. Bathroom door was a sliding door which frequently came off its track, locking someone in until a person on the outside put it back on track. A card to indicate the free coffe/tea service in the morning was present upon checkin and delivered the first morning, but no card or service for the rest of the stay. To get ice, it was necessary to go up to the bar/restaurant and ask for it. It was willingly and quickly given, but not the best atmosphere. The odor of strong coffee permeated the hallways from the 'bistro' downstairs. Location on the main street was good, but a 15 minute walk to the harbor. No good restaurants nearby.

“Good Value in a Good Location”

We were looking for a sinlgle night stay in Victoria as we were on our way elsewhere, so wanted to stay in the middle of the action. A more palatial room was not needed as we were intending to get out to some restos/pubs and see the town. This hotel fits the bill. Simple room. Simple amenities. Simple tv. Clean and quiet. Great location. There are a few pubs nearby some one wonders and about the noise but we never heard a peep even with the window open. Coffee shop in the lobby was a little strange. The only thing I think they could improve is getting the laundry and cleaning carts out of the corridor. It seems they sat there all day. Good value. Would definitely stay there again.

“Great Location - Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2010

We spent 3 days in Victoria to celebrate our anniversary and chose this hotel as we love the location...Bastion Square and Lower Johnston Street. Chinatown is close by as well. Step out the lobby door and turn right and go to Munro’s Book Store and Murchies teas with a fabulous tea shop and casual pastry/deli just right for your own high tea. A block away is our new favorite...The Bard and Banker. We did not eat but had an after dinner drink while enjoying the music of the evening.
Turn to the right and you are at Bastion Square and the Times Square Pub offering lovely outside seating and delicious fish and chips. Keeping going a few block and hit Johnston street - the many shops and great restaurants kept us going throughout the day and night.

When we checked in, the person told us he had upgraded our room from a standard to a jr. suite at no extra charge. We had an interior court yard room #34 and it was charming and very clean. The view is not really into a court yard but rather at rooms across from us. The windows were decorated with lovely window boxes full of flowers and the only person we saw was the maid watering the boxes. The bed was comfortable, the water hot and everything was clean. This hotel reminds us of the typical European hotel only with a larger room. Oh, and sharing the lobby of the hotel is a wonderful coffee shop that opens at 6:30 serving breakfast and lunch. Try the spinach and Assiago cheese croissant - really tasty. And, their coffee selections put Starbucks to shame!

Over the years, we have stayed in various places in Victoria including the Empress, but for our money, this location just cannot be beat. The shops are small, quaint, fun and funky. Bastion Square offers an open air art booths and a farmers market. Anchored by the Irish Times on the Government Square side, walk towards the water and there are 3 more establishments offering outdoor seating as well.

The inner harbor is a bit of hike but definitely do able. Since we have been there done that so many times, we did not get down there this trip. No need, we enjoyed gorgeous views sitting on the many benches located in the area and ate at the water view restaurants. For the money, this hotel can't be beat. We will definitely go back.

“Good for average budget hotel stays”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2010

I went with my family for the local dragon boat festival and stayed in this boutique hotel for 2 nights over the weekend. The place were almost full hoursed, the rooms are cozy and we stayed in room 48 and 47. Our room has clear harbour views, really refreshing. My parent's room has a seperate living space with a comfortalbe coach and fire place. We are very pleased with our stays under our limited budget for 2 nights, we also get a discount on it since we booked 4 nights for 2 of the best room long time ago. The coffee shop makes the lobby bit crowed but they serve good taste latte. First day we had breakfast and coffee and murchies next to it. They also have good light coffee and their cakes taste really good with afternoon tea. My family really enjoys the comfortness and convience of staying in the centre of downtown victoria. And we also went to the its old pub to have beer afterwards. The weather in the first day is really good and we had a good time for the weekend.

“Dated. In need of facelift.”

Very dated hotel.

The narrow hallways are in need of a coat of paint and the bathrooms are a little strange (no real 'door')... very odd.

But the view (from at least one side) of the harbour is stunning.
