We spent 3 days in Victoria to celebrate our anniversary and chose this hotel as we love the location...Bastion Square and Lower Johnston Street. Chinatown is close by as well. Step out the lobby door and turn right and go to Munro’s Book Store and Murchies teas with a fabulous tea shop and casual pastry/deli just right for your own high tea. A block away is our new favorite...The Bard and Banker. We did not eat but had an after dinner drink while enjoying the music of the evening.
Turn to the right and you are at Bastion Square and the Times Square Pub offering lovely outside seating and delicious fish and chips. Keeping going a few block and hit Johnston street - the many shops and great restaurants kept us going throughout the day and night.
When we checked in, the person told us he had upgraded our room from a standard to a jr. suite at no extra charge. We had an interior court yard room #34 and it was charming and very clean. The view is not really into a court yard but rather at rooms across from us. The windows were decorated with lovely window boxes full of flowers and the only person we saw was the maid watering the boxes. The bed was comfortable, the water hot and everything was clean. This hotel reminds us of the typical European hotel only with a larger room. Oh, and sharing the lobby of the hotel is a wonderful coffee shop that opens at 6:30 serving breakfast and lunch. Try the spinach and Assiago cheese croissant - really tasty. And, their coffee selections put Starbucks to shame!
Over the years, we have stayed in various places in Victoria including the Empress, but for our money, this location just cannot be beat. The shops are small, quaint, fun and funky. Bastion Square offers an open air art booths and a farmers market. Anchored by the Irish Times on the Government Square side, walk towards the water and there are 3 more establishments offering outdoor seating as well.
The inner harbor is a bit of hike but definitely do able. Since we have been there done that so many times, we did not get down there this trip. No need, we enjoyed gorgeous views sitting on the many benches located in the area and ate at the water view restaurants. For the money, this hotel can't be beat. We will definitely go back.
