Every Bed & Breakfast owner should spend a night or two at Granville B&B to see how it's done. Wow.
My husband and I spent two nights in the Birch Room on our first trip to Vancouver. First off, the reservation process on their website was seamless. You can easily view a calendar of availability for various rooms, the rate information is clearly spelled out, and you get a larger discount the longer you stay. We even got a small "Fill the Gap" bonus discount for booking within 48 hours of our stay. My credit card was charged the night I booked the room, and an email confirmation was delivered immediately. The next morning I received an email with detailed check-in information, key codes for entering the building, and driving directions.
We arrived after dark, tired and not interested in talking to anyone. The key code worked perfectly both to enter the house and to enter our room... no need to chat with the owners before getting a room key. It was a quiet night and felt like we had the house to ourselves! The house itself was in sparkling condition, both elegantly designed and decorated for modern tastes. No extravagance and certainly no gaudy country fabrics.
Our "junior suite" was similarly designed with a pleasant color palette, a bay window with blinds and roman shades, and thick, soft carpet on which I was not afraid to go barefoot (probably thanks to their no-shoes-indoors policy). The bed was very comfortable with a high-quality duvet and our choice of down or hypo-allergenic pillows. The bathroom, oh, I want a bathroom just like it at home! Beautiful tiles around a perfect tub - no jets, but perfect for soaking. Adjustable double shower heads that suited both me and my tall husband. Great lighting, two square sinks on a long vanity, and a huge mirror. We fell in love with this suite before we even noticed the refrigerator and coffee/tea service inside the large closet. The list of amenities goes on: free wi-fi and local calls; deluxe soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion; a binder with local information and recommendations; even a VOIP phone downstairs to call long-distance.
After our first good night's sleep, we went downstairs for breakfast and were delighted with the breakfast buffet they had set up. Fresh coffee and tea, cold cereal, fruit, yogurt, orange juice, hot oatmeal in a covered crock pot (with brown sugar, raisins, dried cranberries and dried cherries for toppings), and a chafing dish where individual servings of the daily hot breakfast stayed warm. We ate richly flavored omelettes that first morning and drool-worthy berry pastries the second morning. Because we'd noted my husband's lactose intolerance as a dietary restriction when making the online reservation, they'd taken care to make and label a non-dairy omelette for him.
We chatted with both Pam and Randy each morning and they obviously enjoyed being our hosts. They were helpful and accommodating (even made sure that my husband knew he could help himself to the almond and soy milk in the fridge at any time) and just wonderful people. Randy highly recommended that we take the bus down Granville Street into downtown rather than driving, which we did and ended up saving on parking, not to mention the hassle.
Overall, our stay at the Granville House B&B was better than we could have imagined it would be. We got lucky with our last-minute mid-week visit in terms of availability and price, but next time we travel to Vancouver I will go out of my way to ensure that we can stay here again.
My only recommendation would be an improved sign out front. We got turned around while driving into the city in the dark and had some trouble confirming the location--it's a residential area with hard-to-see house numbers and an unlit B&B sign that we mistook for a real estate sign.
Once you find it, though, you'll have a hard time leaving!
Room Tip: The Birch Room was perfect for two people.
