“Stay Away! Ugly, old rooms, and very very dusty!”

Do not be mislead by the normal appearance of the building from the outside. Once you enter into the building, you will realize that this place is very out-of-date. The rooms have shag carpet, acqua-coloured bathroom fixtures, and basically every piece of furniture looks like it hasn't been changed/renovated/replaced since the '50s.

To give you a better idea of how old this place is, at the front room, (in the office), the brochure stand looks normal....but after checking out and showing the concierge at our new/normal hotel this brochure, the concierge explained to us that this brochure (from 'shato/chateau inn') is in fact from 1998! In other words, the majority of the activities are no longer running and the prices are based on prices from 10 years ago.

The staff there was this French couple. When we checked out first thing in the morning, because my girlfriend had been experiencing asthma from the uncleanliness/dust from the room, the man/owner at the desk, was very difficult and wanted to charge me for multiple nights given their cancellation policy. I was very upset and taken aback by this. In the hospitality industry, your first response should be 'how can I try to make your stay more enjoyable/pleasant? How can we better accommodate you?" This was the opposite of what we experienced....after telling the man about my girlfriend's asthma, I was expecting a deep discount, instead the guy called Visa's 1-800 #, to charge my credit card - note, obviously they don't have any swipe machine to charge your credit card, this was very old fashioned, and the rooms were very old/dirty, and the man was very unhelpful and rude....even called me childish in how I acted when I was relating that we wanted to leave because we were experiencing breathing problems due to his room's uncleanliness!
Stay away, rip off city, $128 for one night in the ugliest room you can imagine!

  • Liked — Nothing
  • Disliked — Everything! Dirty, old, out-dated, unfriendly/unhelpful and just plain rude elderly man who is the owner!

“Crazy People, Crazy Reviews”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2008

We rolled into Vancouver with no reservations, found that most places were booked up. This little motel is not a Ritz Carlton, but still sufficed as a place to bunk up for a couple of days.
Not the cheapest, not the most up to date interior design, but great location in Vancouver. I think that people forgot to say that even though it was 120 a night, that most of the hotels around were much more expensive than that, especially in August.

“Yikes”

Can't believe that a place like this stays in business.
Our room was booked by friends that live nearby, when we arrived, we were given a different room that was disgusting, terrible, abominable, etc.....
The original room that we were supposed to have was OK but still, the price of $120 is outrageous, you can definately do better in Vancouver.
We booked for three day and ended up toughing it out for one and then moved, the owner tried to give a hard time and stated that he needed 2 days notice to canel our booking but we talked him out of it.
Some updates are definately needed because this place has authentic and well used '60's decor. The smell in the hallways is also terrible and seeps somewhat into the rooms which is an interesting aroma of mildew and just old.

“Yeah, not good. Especially if you have allergies.”

This place is heavy on the 70s decor, and our room seemed not to have been vaccummed or cleaned since then. To whit, from the second I woke up in the morning, I began sneezing violently. My eyes and my nose also ran. (I'm not like that at home, and I've never been like that anywhere else.) Mold spores from the uber-thick shag?

The owners live in the hotel and the whole set up just seemed a little odd. The parking garage, underneath the hotel, reminded my friend and I of the set of a horror movie. It just gave us the creeps. That fact was compounded with our inability to open any of the doors that led from the garage into the hotel. We had to open the door for cars and walk around to the hotel's main door.

The only charms to be found were nice flowers around the place and a cute balcony off our room. The location is fabulous too--near Stanley Park and Denman Street and close enough to Granville Island. This place would be an absolute gem if they rehabbed. (I'm a 35-year-old middleclass female.)

“Awful, and not cheap”

This place was recommended by the Rough Guide as an alternative to the Sylvia Hotel which is nearby. The location is good, very near to the beach and Stanely Park, but the place is awful. And not cheap! At $130 a night you expect better than stinky shag carpet, no air conditioning, threadbare towels, and lumpy pillows. The inn-keepers are a quirky and likeable pair of octogenarians who long ago stopped noticing the nasty smell throughout the small converted apartment building. Staying here is like spending the night in someone's grandparent's stuffy rec room, complete with avocado-colored bathroom fixtures, wood panelling, wacky 70's "art pottery" table lamps, a mismatched collection of 30 year old hangers in the closet, and old grocery store bags lining the trashcans.
