I stayed at the Sandman Hotel Vancouver City Center for two nights in mid January 2012. I removed all my belongings from my car and stored the GPS in the glovebox before parking my car in the underground paid parking lot with security and limited entry. When I checked out of the hotel and got to my car, I found my car to be damaged. Somebody had broken into my car through the driver's side window (smashed to pieces) and stolen the GPS from the glove box. I came upstairs and told the hotel about the incident. Front desk told me that such incidents are rare in the area and in the hotel. I later find out from people working in the parking lot and nearby area that such incidents occur about once a week in the hotel!!! Furthermore, the manager told me that the cameras were not functioning when I had my car parked and the hotel is not liable for the damage to my car despite the secured parking lot. His words "security is for honest people and doesn't stop the vagrants from breaking into vehicles." Total car damage > $2000, which my car insurance company is partly paying. Hotel wouldn't cover part of my bill or provide a voucher so that I can get over this terrible experience.
Bottom line: Don't stay in this hotel or nearby area. If you must, don't park your car in the so called secured paid parking lot. This warning is especially true for travelers from outside British Columbia.
