I'm a rural sort of person so staying in the heart of downtown Vancouver was a bit of an intimidating experience for me. From the moment we arrived at Barclay House any apprehension I may have been experiencing faded away and we had a terrific five-night stay for Grey Cup weekend.
We arrived in the late afternoon and everything we needed was waiting for us. All of our instructions were clear and detailed and as we were making our way to the Beach Room we met Dennis who immediately proved to be helpful and friendly, as he would be throughout our stay.
The room was immaculate and had a basket of cookies and champaign waiting. They thought of everything we needed to make our stay perfect, even having an iPod dock in the sitting area. Staying with two other couples gave us the advantage of being able to see a couple of the other rooms (Forest and Peak) -- each had its own unique charms. The bed was warm and inviting which was good because our room had a tendency to be a bit on the cool side -- fortunately we had a gas operated fireplace that made taking the chill off quick and easy.
The breakfasts were wonderfully prepared and served by Dennis. There is nothing to make one feel pampered quite like coming downstairs, sitting in the front parlour with the morning newspaper and then having breakfast served to you.
Dennis made a wonderful host -- always willing to answer questions, make suggestions and help out with resetting the power when the breaker tripped (which happened more than once -- too many hairdryers, ladies?). On the day of our departure he caught wind that we had to leave for the airport before the normal breakfast hours and he offered to have something ready for us early -- we were expecting some coffee and maybe a muffin but instead he actually specially prepared the same breakfast our later-rising friends would enjoy. You just can't beat that!
The Barclay House is perfectly situated right in the middle of the west end, meaning most things were easily within walking distance. Our rental car spent most of its time in the parking area at the back -- we simply didn't need it to get around all weekend.
I have no doubts that the next time we visit Vancouver we know exactly where we will be staying.
