“Ground level Harbor view room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

I think it was room 304... the view from our particular room was partially obstructed, but we still had a good view of the harbor and the Sister Islands, so I am sure the view from the 2nd floor is spectacular. The hotel is located right across the street from a small boat launch, and a 5min walk from Ganges marina. The lobby had a nice fall harvest theme going. Food in the restaurant was great, and the small organic farm in the back is very cute.

I would highly recommend the place for accommodation on Salt Spring

“Totally restful”

The Harbour House staff gave me a room that was immaculate, with a high ceiling, making it feel very spacious. The room had two queen beds, made up with crisp, white linens. As I was comfortably falling asleep, I could hear the sound of raindrops on the roof. It was exactly the calming experience I wanted!

One thing I particularly liked was opening the closet and finding it stocked with items a guest might need, like an iron and ironing board, an extra blanket and pillow, and even an electric fan, saving me from having to call the housekeeper. Items that you normally expect were there, like coffee, shampoo, and all that, but all of excellent quality (Two Leaves and a Bud tea, for example, and honey/vanilla shampoo). Thoughtful touches that made everything more enjoyable.

I also loved the restaurant (you can see my review in the restaurant section). Truly yummy, and I really want to have the maple quinoa pudding for breakfast next time I stay. There wasn't time to try everything! The menu was inventive--an organic foodie's delight.

My one problem was trying to figure out how to use the phone. Not my best thing. But that was incredibly minor compared to the friendly welcome from everyone, the amazing location, and the peaceful atmosphere.

Room Tip: Book in advance if you want a room with a harbor view. I didn't, but I loved my peaceful room an...

“Great changes since last visit in 2007”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

The last time I stayed here was in 2007, and there have been some great changes since then. This time we stayed in room 304, which is one of the "dog-friendly" rooms on the ground floor. This is a great place to stay with a dog - on check-in we got a special package of dog treats and the room opened onto a nice big grassy area for our dog to sniff around in. The room was basic but very comfortable, and I was really impressed with the linens - instead of the typical hotel bedspread, there was a lovely white duvet cover and obviously new high-quality sheets, which made the room and bed feel very fresh and clean. It was very quiet throughout our 3 night stay, and we were really glad we chose to stay here as our home base during a busy long weekend.

The other highlight of the hotel is the restaurant - we ate there 4 times, and each meal was totally delicious with fresh lettuces and vegetables from the hotel garden. We ended up eating at the hotel restaurant several times rather than going into Ganges because the food was so much better than anywhere else we went! The farm is a real working farm, not just a herb garden, and it was really fun to walk up and see the food being harvested for that day's meals.

Overall, we were so happy we stayed here and it will be our first choice to return to whenever we come to Salt Spring.

“Nothing like the photo - worst room ever stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

I've never stayed in a room that looks so different from what is shown on the website. Can't remember the room number but it was at the end of the corridor on the left with a horrible view over extractor to the back. It was awful and looked more like a youth hostel not a hotel room, especially one we were paying decent money for. The room was massive with a disgusting old carpet and shoddy chairs and beds that could be folded up into the wall and a row of institutional looking lights. It must have been a games room or something, can't have been designed as a bedroom. Felt completely missold.

It was such a shame as was a very long trip out to Salt Spring and was horrible to be so disappointed with room, it took the shine off our first day on the island.

Ate breakfast there which was great and enjoyed walking round their organic garden and meeting the goats but just don't think it's right to show a photo such as one above when any of rooms fall so far below this standard. If you stay here make sure you don't get room with two beds facing back of hotel - dreadful.

I know which room you're talking about & I'm sorry that it wasn't to your liking. It has 2 Murphy beds which can be easily stored away so that the room can also be used for meetings. Some people like the additional space and the large kitchenette but I agree that it can also appear institutional. Our regular rooms were booked when you made your reservation; otherwise, this would not have been sold.

We have had similar complaints about this room which has made us decide to convert it back to a guest room with better furnishings, lighting & carpeting. This will be done before next summer. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we hope that you will visit us again in the future.
