Booked this accommodation online from the UK; received an email stating the agreeded rate and paid one night's deposit up front. However, when checked out were charged $100 a night more!! Said that our email was computer generated and the rates had since gone up - not bothered to tell us this and have had no explanation or apology. All of this would not be so bad if the experience had been worth it. I can only agree with other reviews about dated and worn furniture; poorly maintained grounds; a tub that took hours to fill and with no instructions of how to operate; spa facilities dingy and noisy with overpriced treatments- the person who did my treatment stank of curry!! It was like camping - which is fine but not at the prices they were charging!! Notices stating that if you do not wash your dishes before leaving you will be charged $10 hardly match up with the prices charged!! Whole place has an air of being run on a shoe string. Avoid.

This place has aged...ungracefully. The whole place looks like it needs a face lift (i.e. paint and spring clean) and the actual 'spa' looks like a very amateur and unprofessional attempt. The spa staff look like they could use some of the treatments as well. The 'chalet' wasn't ready when we arrived and despite no-one actually being booked in to ours they insisted for the sake of $20 that we move for the second night. As a result we decided to leave a night early.

Management response from Leslie Jenson, Manager
(Management representative)
11 Feb 2010
Please note that the Salt Springs Spa Resort has recently completed several upgrades including new wood floors in all chalets, new paint, new roofing, new furniture, linens, bedding and decor. New and very qualified spa and reception staff has recently been hired and the spa has received a makeover.

I took my mother to Salt Spring Island because she had never been before. The spa staff were friendly, the grounds are really lovely, spa very relaxing, and overall the experience was perfect. We wanted a couple days to escape Vancouver and we really enjoyed our time at the resort. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the island.

  • Liked — Big Jacuzzi Tub!
  • Disliked — Some of the decor was very Kitsch

The chalets themselves were nice, but as others have mentioned, older, rustic and not luxurious if that's what you're expecting. The chalets are semi-private, but not secluded. It is quiet at night unless there is a noisy neighbor. Chalets are positioned about 8 feet apart from each other.

From the pictures, I thought we'd be able to walk right out and sit by the beach. The chalet does have a nice view of the water and brown grass with weeds. There is a public road that runs in front of the cabins and in order to get to the beach, one has to cross the road and climb down a steep staircase. At the bottom of the staircase is a small dock and not much of a beach.

We came here for a babymoon and had a couples massage scheduled. I asked a COUPLE of times if they gave pregnancy massages before I booked the chalet. They said, yes, we are equipped to give pregnancy massages. When we had our massages, it become quickly apparent that the masseuse did not know how to massage a pregnant woman.

Pregnant women have achy hips and sore back muscles. I stated on my massage form that those were the areas that were bothering me and the reason why I had scheduled my appointment. However, about 3/4 of the way through my massage, she had only worked on my legs, arms and head. Then she asked is she could rub my belly. I said, "no, my back and hips are really sore and I'd appreciate it if you could work on those areas".

She agreed to do this, but she seemed at a loss on how to position me on my side. I was left with no pillow for my head. She briefly went over my back and hips. By the time the massage was complete, I was more stressed and upset than when I had arrived. One other comment...they had rented out the top of the spa to a family with many kids. During our massage, there was nice music mixed with very loud running and stumping from the above floor..not very relaxing.

The spa agreed to take 20% off of my massage or offered another massage. At this point I didn't feel comfortable going back. I wish they would have just given a full refund as the massage was useless and I was disappointed after looking forward to some relief after a long trip.

  • Liked — The view of the water and quiet surroundings
  • Disliked — Pregnancy massage was disappointing

We were doing a week-long trip through BC and I suggested we Stay a night on Salt Spring after having visited two years prior (stayed at a friend's cottage before). Coming from Toronto to Vancouver was relaxing, Vancouver to Victoria was more relaxing still. By the time we left Salt Spring we were in bliss.
Since we wanted some spa treatments anyways, we decided to try the Salt Spring Spa.
It was wonderful!
No TV, No phone, nice little kitchenette and a 2-person mineral hot tub. (they also offered access to laundry facilities, which was nice half way through our trip). We reserved just a few days before we arrived so we wern't able to book an ocean-view, but the forest view was still pretty.
The spa treatments were well done and very relaxing. The room was actually our own private chalet. the main road was perfect for a relaxing run. There was a general store/café down the street where I was able to pick up dinner and some snacks. Just a short drive from Ganges we felt we were close to town, but still in the country.
Would go back in a heartbeat!

  • Liked — solitude, natural, quiet
  • Disliked — smelly mineral water for hot tub (but necessary)
