First, I have to say that the staff were pleasant, and I feel badly for them that they have to work in such a place.
I actually didn't end up staying there ... I walked in, and walked back out 5 minutes later.
I arrived at the Howard Johnson, after my cab ride from the Nanaimo airport. The cab driver actually told me its where all the junkies go!!! :-( It was an old slummy bar with a very bad reputation in this little city, prior to becomming the HoJo. The building/location itself still has a very bad reputation!!!
I also discovered that it is actually attached to a bus station in the back ... ATTACHED! Noisey!
It also shares a parking lot with the local liquer store.
I went into my room, and the top of my door actually didn't shut. There was a actualy hole at the top of my door!!! Wreaked of smoke!!!
But the worst part, was that right beside my room, with my tissue paper door, there was a door to the outside area by the bus station, left wide open ... completelty unmonitored!!! So anyone, and I mean anyone ... can just waltz right in to the hotel ... God forbid the door locks don't hold up!
There is a grimmy bar, also attached to the bus station in the back, and therefore attached to the actual hotel ... just behind the hotel ... they don't show any of this in their pictures ...
Stay AWAY .. stay far far away!!!

Good Day Sweet Pea and other guests,
Thank you for your blunt and frank comments about your experience at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel in Nanaimo. Thank you for mentioning the friendliness of the front desk staff, they are well trained and would have been happy to assist you with your concerns as you stated in your email. If you had asked the front desk about moving into a different room or about the security and safety issues the front desk would have been very happy to address and resolve your concerns and hopefully turned you into a very satisfied Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel guest.
We learn new things everyday about providing service to our guests and your comments are valuable for us to clear up some major misconceptions about the hotel that were stated by the “cab driver” which really saddened me – we have work to do in the community to update what is happening at the hotel.
We can only learn and go forward – thank you again for your comments.
The hotel no longer has a pub/bar which closed in October 2006. Part of the pub/bar was renovated in 2007 into a fitness facility for hotel guests’ to use on a complimentary basis. The outside hotel entrance facing the bus depot is currently being renovated for new leased space to open June 1st, 2010.
The bus depot is attached to the hotel and is open from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm daily, separated from the hotel by an outside exit for guests to come and go, to check into the hotel or go the hotel restaurant. All the exit doors and lobby doors are locked at 11:00 pm and have alarms and video surveillance to ensure guest safety. The hotel also has night security seven nights a week checking both inside and outside of the hotel and surrounding area. The side exit should not have been left open steps have been implemented to prevent the door from being left open in the future.
The guest room doors are solid wood doors with key lock, deadbolt lock and a swing arm lock and a peep hole – the door locks into a metal door frame surrounding the guest room door.
The Howard Johnson Harbourside takes all guest comments and concerns seriously and we thank you for the good and bad comments as we can only learn from honest and constructive feedback about how we are doing.
go happy go hojo
Thank you
