“Sleeping in the bus depot would have been safer...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2010

Stayed at the HoJo last June with a minor softball team. This hotel is NOT appropriate for any children or young adults! While the rooms wer acceptable, the other guests were not. There were drunks wandering the halls and trying to open teh doors of rooms belonging to our group. The smell of marijuana coming from several rooms was overpowering. Outside the front door at night was a wall of pot smoke.

When I mentioned this upon check-out I was brushed off with indifference.

I realize its not the greatest part of town, but don't advertise yourself as being minor sports team friendly when it isn't safe to have kids around there.

Good Day Whitecapsfan,
Thank you for your frank comment on TripAdvisor dated October 21st, 2010 concerning your experience while staying with a minor sports team in June 2010. I am very sorry that you had to experience some bad behaviour of other guests while staying at the hotel. We do strive to provide a safe and smoke free enviroment for all guests while staying at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel Nanaimo. Unfortunately not all individuals respect other people staying in a hotel when it comes to being rowdy and knocking on doors and smoking in the hotel or smoking just outside of hotel entrances. I understand how one would feel hearing loud behaviour and smelling marijuana, especially with children in the room. It only takes a few indivduals to spoil others sleep and comfort. I am disappointed that the evening hotel staff did not respond to the noise issues and stop the smoking at the front entrance.

Please accept my sincere apology for the "indifference" you received when mentioning the situation the following day at the front desk. This is not typical behaviour of the front desk staff at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel Nanaimo.

I am sorry that your experience was not a positive one while in Nanaimo at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel -
Erik Brook

“Good Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

I checked the tripadvisor reviews after I made my reservations and I was a little worried, but it was fine. No, it wasn't a deluxe stay that's for sure, but for $89/night I wasn't expecting it to be a 5-star property.
I think it was good value for the money.
The room was clean, the bed was pretty comfortable and everything worked. I was also pleasantly suprised to get a voucher for a free hot breakfast in the hotel restaurant for each morning of my stay.
I didn't experience any problems with noise and didn't feel unsafe.
I appreciated the free wireless internet and free parking too.
Yes, the Coast Hotel in Nanaimo is newer and for sure nicer, but it was also twice the price. I was satisfied with my stay considering the price I paid.

“Location but needs room upgrades”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

You get what you pay for but with a little extra effort and minimal cost, the hotel could be improved. The bathroom needed work to remove black mould from around the bath tub. However, in general the rooms were clean and everything worked.
It is adjacent to the seafront and Millstone Creek walkways which provided a pleasant way to get some exercise.

“a throw back to the 80s”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

This place was a time machine. I walked into the lobby in 2009 and was taken promptly back to the 1980s!! Dated, tired and overall a bit cheesey. The room was clean and very spacious and if you like 80s decor then you'll love the furnishings. The bed was lumpy but comfortable enough and the room was well equipped with all the mod cons. There was a loud buzzing noise coming from somewhere outside which might have been something to do with the air con or pool.

My partner enjoyed a swim in the large pool but in the evenings it seems to act like a magnet to loud drinkers, who would come and booze it up. We didn't get much sleep due to this roudy noise but to be fair it wasn't the hotel's fault. Although there is a liquor shop right next door.

The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good - a hearty full English fry up with toast and preserves. Great coffee too. The location was also a bonus as it was only a short walk to Nanaimo's beautiful harbour which is packed with fabulous eateries. There is also a superb restaurant nearby called Mrs Riches where we ate 2 nights in a row as it served the best food we experienced in Canada and would definitely recommend it.

The hotel was fine for 2 nights and provides a good base to explore the area. But it's tired, in need of a good lick of paint and a little bit souless. Saying that, you get what you pay for and we paid peanuts!

“Run for your life!!!”

First, I have to say that the staff were pleasant, and I feel badly for them that they have to work in such a place.

I actually didn't end up staying there ... I walked in, and walked back out 5 minutes later.
I arrived at the Howard Johnson, after my cab ride from the Nanaimo airport. The cab driver actually told me its where all the junkies go!!! :-( It was an old slummy bar with a very bad reputation in this little city, prior to becomming the HoJo. The building/location itself still has a very bad reputation!!!
I also discovered that it is actually attached to a bus station in the back ... ATTACHED! Noisey!
It also shares a parking lot with the local liquer store.

I went into my room, and the top of my door actually didn't shut. There was a actualy hole at the top of my door!!! Wreaked of smoke!!!

But the worst part, was that right beside my room, with my tissue paper door, there was a door to the outside area by the bus station, left wide open ... completelty unmonitored!!! So anyone, and I mean anyone ... can just waltz right in to the hotel ... God forbid the door locks don't hold up!

There is a grimmy bar, also attached to the bus station in the back, and therefore attached to the actual hotel ... just behind the hotel ... they don't show any of this in their pictures ...
Stay AWAY .. stay far far away!!!

Good Day Sweet Pea and other guests,

Thank you for your blunt and frank comments about your experience at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel in Nanaimo. Thank you for mentioning the friendliness of the front desk staff, they are well trained and would have been happy to assist you with your concerns as you stated in your email. If you had asked the front desk about moving into a different room or about the security and safety issues the front desk would have been very happy to address and resolve your concerns and hopefully turned you into a very satisfied Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel guest.

We learn new things everyday about providing service to our guests and your comments are valuable for us to clear up some major misconceptions about the hotel that were stated by the “cab driver” which really saddened me – we have work to do in the community to update what is happening at the hotel.
We can only learn and go forward – thank you again for your comments.

The hotel no longer has a pub/bar which closed in October 2006. Part of the pub/bar was renovated in 2007 into a fitness facility for hotel guests’ to use on a complimentary basis. The outside hotel entrance facing the bus depot is currently being renovated for new leased space to open June 1st, 2010.

The bus depot is attached to the hotel and is open from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm daily, separated from the hotel by an outside exit for guests to come and go, to check into the hotel or go the hotel restaurant. All the exit doors and lobby doors are locked at 11:00 pm and have alarms and video surveillance to ensure guest safety. The hotel also has night security seven nights a week checking both inside and outside of the hotel and surrounding area. The side exit should not have been left open steps have been implemented to prevent the door from being left open in the future.

The guest room doors are solid wood doors with key lock, deadbolt lock and a swing arm lock and a peep hole – the door locks into a metal door frame surrounding the guest room door.

The Howard Johnson Harbourside takes all guest comments and concerns seriously and we thank you for the good and bad comments as we can only learn from honest and constructive feedback about how we are doing.

go happy go hojo

Thank you
