We stayed at the Manteo about 3 years ago, and were impressed, so decided to return for a 2 night stay in October this year. This time we opted for a one-bedroom suite. The location of the room was fine - overlooking a tiny creek and with a peekaboo of the lake. But no complaint as we did not choose a lakeview. Housekeeping for the room was good. However, the room lacked warmth. Upon walking in, it seemed the room was bare. The furniture was uninspiring, Reminded us of furniture in budget hotels. The kitchen lacked certain essential kitchen implements, but we managed with a bit of creativity. The toaster has seen better days. On the first evening we were entertained by intermittent buzzing sounds. Upon query, the front desk informed us that it had something to do with the heating system.
It appears from the manner of the front desk person, that Manteo has a policy that guests arriving before 4 p.m. were to be turned away . We arrived at 3:30 p.m. and were told in no uncertain terms that we could not check in till 4p.m. If the hotel was full on the night of October 25, I can accept that the housekeepimg staff will not have a room ready at 3:30 p.m. Check out time is 11:00 a.m. and I am sure that a few guests would have left before then. The outdoor pools were already closed for the season, but we had expected it. The steam room was available, but needs a good scrub. The big plus is the location of the resort. It is right on the lake, and close to a couple of upscale wineries and the farmer's market. On an evening walk on the boardwalk we were treated to a beautiful sunset . Hope that our one-bedroom suite is diarized for an upgrade by the owners.
