“Good value for money...owner Freddie is wonderful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2011

I am counteracting the negative reviews posted in Aug 2010 which almost made us not return here. Thriftlodge will have a new sign soon Valleyview.
Yes it's an "older, character" motel that provides friendly, attentive service with all of the essentials after covering many miles in a day. Decent beds, hot showers, loads of towels, coffee maker, Older TV with many, many channels.
A friend had his windshield broken by accident, as soon as we arrived. Freddie, the owner was super helpful and supportive and we had in fixed just down the road in a couple of hours. We also had a wholesome, comfort food meal at Harold's down the strip!

Room Tip: Quiet rooms off the highway are in the back!

“Beware of Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde; AKA Freddie”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

He greeted us and our children in our van with large Mr. Freezies and a great big smile. He introduced himself as Freddie and made a joke about the Flintstones. It seemed too over the top and by the next morning he showed his true colours!!

When it was time for the continental breakfast he went out of his way to create confrontation and he ended up making our eldest daughter (12) cry. He would not allow her to have one slice of toast. She had made a slice of toast for everyone else in the family and had brought it to our room. When she went to get a slice for herself he told her that she had already had enough and she was not allowed anymore.

We have a large family and only took four muffins total and a slice of toast each (except our 12 year old daughter) . He said " I have been watching and you have taken too much" . Our daughter tried to explain the situation but he just shut her out. We went to explain the situation and he would not have any of our story he just shut us out. We looked around and on the picnic table we saw others with 2 and 3 muffins each. He also limited us to 1 cup of coffee per adult and half a cup of juice per child. His actions and his attitude were absolutely disgusting and if any family with children are contemplating this accommodation please, please think again and DO NOT REGISTER HERE. Our daughter will remember Freddie as the old man who appears nice at first and turns out to be bad_ _ _ _ _ _ _ a good lesson, we suppose, for life that not everyone who seems nice is nice.

The room was not clean, the A.C. noisy and in need of repair. The washrooms were extremely small and even though it was advertised free coffee in room there was an old coffee maker but no coffee!! When we went to ask for coffee we were told you are only allowed to have your own purchased coffee.

DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THIS ESTABLISHMENT. PLEASE LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!

“Phenomenal service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

I was literally rescued by Freddy, the new owner of Thriftlodge, when my car became broken down on the side of the highway in a construction bottle neck.
Freddy kindly offered me a swim in the pool on this sweltering day and was able to arrange for my car to get fixed by his own family - no charge.
Thanks very much Freddy! Your kindness was much appreciated and I was able to make it home in time to see my new niece!
The pool and the folks I met there were lovely. Thriftlodge will be an great place to stay on my next travels through.

“Bob, the manager wanted to beat up my husband in the parking lot”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2009

We stayed here a couple of times before, so we went for a third stay. We showed up tonight, Christmas night. We walked into the office, with smiles and Merry Christmas's. I started registering us, and my hubby started small talk with the owner. My hubby noticed an uninsured vehicle in the lot and casually asked about it. Well, that was it! Bob, the owner freaked out on my husband, telling my hubby it was HIS car and what about it etc. This lead to Bob, threatening my husband with physical harm, out it the parking lot! I told Rose, Bob's wife, that we would like our money back, and that we didn't want a problem, and would just leave. Well, Bob INSISTED that we "get out right now". While I was getting our refund, Bob escorted my husband outside, and further insulted and threatened my husband. We left, but quicly realized that Bob had all our info on the registtration. We went back and I went into the office. I asked Rose to shred our registration papers, but Bob insisted that she not do that. I insisted that they did, and Bob's wife did as I asked, while Bob scowled at me and muttered at me under his breath. We promptly went to the local police station to file a complaint of threat against us. The cops took our statement, went and talked to Bob, and did NOTHING!

“Run down, noisy, and dirty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

What I liked:
Our bathroom shower had one of those new bent shower rods which makes the shower feel twice as big and keeps the curtain from sticking to you. This really had a big positive impact on my comfort level.

The fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and TV were all newer and in good shape. There is nothing else to go along with the coffee maker to make coffee in your room though.

The location of the hotel made it easy to find and had easy access to the highway into the city.

Room:
The cleanliness of the room was average but the bathroom cleanliness was lacking. There was a buildup of moisture creating yellow drops on the ceiling and the shower curtain was starting to grow pink and black mold. The moister also damaged the door and it was in need of repair. There was a fan in the bathroom but it sounded like it was about to fail.

The AC unit was very outdated, loud and dirty.

It could have been from the AC being in the wall but our rooms were all very noisy. If anyone walked by you could hear them, not to mention the trains that come by at regular intervals during the night. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper.

In response to the review about bed bugs, there were none to be seen in the rooms that I and my family used. I asked the hotel management about bugs in response to that review and was reassured that they have taken care of that issue.

Next time I am in Kamloops I will be looking for somewhere else to stay.
