We booked a room for one night several months in advance, and found the owner very friendly and helpful. He did, however, take a deposit for the room from our credit card, which is common practice for Canada.
However, our stay in Canada coincided with the forest fires in Kamloops, and when I phoned ahead he told me that they were having to evacuate and that we would have to find alternative accommodation. At this point I queried the deposit, and he claimed that he didn't think he had taken one. He said he would check, and refund it if that was the case. We still have not heard from him (this was 7 months ago!).
Admittedly we have not followed it up as we were going to instruct him to donate it to the forest fires fund rather than refund it, but we were annoyed that he attempted to deny taking our money. I advise extreme caution if booking here, and keep all records of your deposits!
