We have been to Harrison Resort just about every winter for the past decade, and it never disappoints.
The hotel itself is very big, clean and the service is fantastic. There are several buildings in the resort, including cottages, and your experience with the rooms and views depends heavily on which building you stay in. The Main/original building is very old, so expect the same in the room layout, size and fixtures. It really does take you back a hundred years, but it's also the cheapest rooms in the hotel. For more updated rooms, try the West Tower, which has your average hotel furniture and layout. Some rooms have views, but many look onto the pools. By far the best building with the best rooms and views is the East Tower, which also come with the highest cost. If money is not a concern, then definitely go with this tower as you will get very spacious rooms with amazing views.
The lobby and lounge of the resort are noteworthy, as they are very spacious and great place to gather with friends in front of the large fireplace or any of the other couched areas about the place. Also has a great bar/lounge to watch sports or have a few drinks.
Keeping in mind that there is very little to do in Harrison, if anything, the only draw are the hot spring pools of this resort. They are fantastic! Three outdoor and one indoor, the pools are the best way to waste the day away. Nothing like soaking in the hot spring pool during a snowfall, it's just magical. Doesn't matter what the weather is like, the pools are open, heated and relaxing. We literally spend all day at the pools when there. Even after the outdoor pools have closed, you can continue the fun at the indoor pool which is open late. The resort knows very well that most if not all of their guests come there for the pools, so they are really good about letting you arrive early, check your bags and hit the pool while you wait for your check-in time. They do the same when checking out, so you can check your bags or take them to the car and continue using the pools until you are tired and ready to head back home. There are changing rooms and showers beside the pools for you to shower and change without the need for your room. We always check-out on time and spend the rest of the day by the pools until late afternoon. Again, the staff are very accommodating.
As for food, the resort does have a couple of dinning options, besides room service. But we have only had breakfast and brunch at the resort. The Lakeside Cafe has a breakfast buffet which is standard fare. Nothing exciting, just good old fashioned breakfast but with killer views if you're lucky enough to get a table by the windows. On weekends the fancy restaurant on the resort, The Copper Room, also offers a great brunch, pricey, but great with all kinds of regular and gourmet brunch items. If you don't mind the hefty price-tag it's definitely worth a try once.
We rarely venture out of the resort when we visit, so couldn't provide you with much info about what there is to see and do in Harrison other than mother nature activities. In the summer, Harrison is a great place to hit the lake beach, swim and have picnics, with lots of people mulling about town doing the same. In winter though, not much fun available other than take walks.
Be it a romantic or family getaway, the Harrison Resort is the perfect winter weekend retreat.
