“Cozy and peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We went up to Green Lake to meet up with some friends to do some snowmobiling. We needed a place to stay for 3 nights and I came across this Horse Ranch and I am sure glad we did,we are not riders ( unless it has an engine in it:-). but its still quite lovley up there. The room was charming in a rustic kind of way.We had the one with the 2 double beds and an attached bathroom. Our host Barbara and Wofgang where very friendly and the breakfeast was plentiful and yummy.
I loved opening the curtains in the morning and seeing the snow with the horses (which they just let wander),and the goat Dolly,They do have WIFI but it can be spotty at times, also no TV which was okay with us. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again!

“Very comfortable and welcoming”

Warm welcome in the middle of a cold winter. Very comfortable accomodation with a lovely rustic feel. Bathroom with shower particularly warm, effecient and pleasant to use .Excellent breakfasts with our hosts Wolfgang and Barbara.
We were visiting friends on a nearby Lake and weren't using the ranch facility for horse riding, but it was lovely to see the horses and other animals about, and how they were cared for in the winter snow.

Room Tip: Big spacious room on ground floor. A family would probably prefer the upstairs 2 rooms.

“great riding & great horses from beginner to accomplished rider”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Just come back from our fab Canadian holiday. One of the definite highlights of the holiday was our stay at the Graham Dunden Ranch! As an accomplished rider I was really looking forward to our horse riding part of the holiday, yet was apprehensive to achieve a great time for all of our family. My husband has only ever been on a horse a few times in his life and both our boys (8 and 10 years old) have grown up around horses but never done any hacking off the leadrein before. Although confident in the saddle it was going to be a big thing for them to be in sole charge of their mounts and I so desperately wanted them to have a great time...

I should not have worried! Wolfgang found a suitable horse for each one of us and we went out together with him and 2 'ranch girls' who all looked after us marvellously well.
We had the best time! The boys came back elated after their first independent ride and I was so proud of all of them! They were taught the ropes about neck reining, which is the western way of steering horses and all took to it really quickly. The horses were a joy to ride, all of them forward going with good brakes, happy to do some work and happy to put up with us / look after us whatever was needed. The boys were so excited, that they could hardly wait for the next ride.

In the afternoon I went for a two hour ride myself without the family and had a cracking time with Wolfgang and the 2 girls! There really is great riding out there and you won't be disappointed even if you have your own horses at home and are used to great riding.

I certainly felt that my family was in the best hands and everything was safe, under control and yet tons of fun. Wolfgang is a really fun and enjoyable guy. We got to walk, trot, and canter/gallop, even managed to put in the odd small natural jump over a log, yet no one was forced into anything they did not wish to do. If some of us wanted to go slower, the group would temporarily divide and none of the horses were in the least bit worried about that. That's what I call service with a smile!

One happy family!!! Wolfgang and Barbara are German but also speak very good English. A big thanks to them and a special mention for Diamond, Joey, Smart & Maple (our wonderful horse partners).

We did not stay in their guest accomodation as we were on the road with our Motorhome. However we had a great spot in a field nearby the ranch house with water and electric hook-up and the view was great!

We saw a family of resident marmots, a coyote whilst out riding, they have some happy pigs and a goat on the ranch plus of course their 10 horses.

Green Lake is very near by, which is great for swimming and walking in the summer and makes for fantastic scenery.

All in all, strongly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in an RV

“Not quite roughing it in the West”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2006

We booked a few days at the Graham Dunden Ranch for a winter horse riding vacation. We arrived and were immediately greeted at the gates by Wolfgang and "Puffy" the cat. Soon after, the 10 horses all came around to say hello. We had room #1 which had two double beds and a private bathroom with shower. You might want to bring a comforter as the one on the bed is small, but considering how warm the room was you may not need it. At -25 celcius outside we were toasty warm in the room. The rooms are in the old ranch house but are very nicely updated in pine with log sidetables. Breakfasts were served with both Wolfgang and Barbara, conveniently timed for vacationers. The ranch is large, with moose (raiding the hay barn), bears, and coyotes all in evidence in the area. We rode two days and were very happy with the guided trails, which were through the bush and meadows, and with the horses supplied. They were obviously well cared for horses and very willing to work with inexperienced riders like us.

For a winter ride in the snow and cold it was a great experience. With Green Lake Provincial Park and other attractions we are seriously considering a summer stay there as well. It's not a five star hotel, it's a comfy and welcoming B&B with rustic touches and a real ranch feel.

  • Liked — The location and atmosphere.
  • Disliked — No TV, but that's just us.
