We spent 3 nights in late-June 2011 at the Cross River Cabins Wilderness Centre, on the fringe of Kootenay National Park. The Centre is located about 8 miles off Highway 93, north-east of Radium Hot Springs. The approach road from the main highway (Settler's Road) is a hard dirt track but don't be put off by that - our rented saloon easily coped with the surface, even in wet weather.
Our experience at Cross River Cabins was one of the top highlights of our first-ever tour to Canada. The Centre is set deep in the countryside and there is a stunning array of wildlife and outdoor activity opportunities on offer. Numerous walking trails fan-out from the Centre itself. We were lucky enough to see the nearby Kootenay and Cross Rivers in full spate while we were there. But what was so special for us was the wonderful hospitality and comfort that we experienced at the Centre itself. The owners - Marilyn and Rob Patenaude - are totally hands-on and dedicated to their mission of ensuring that their guests get the most that they can from their stay. The cabins are cosy and comfortable, and the communal dining/lounge area and adjoining 'hot-tub' are lovely places in which to relax and unwind. The standard of food served up by the brilliant resident chef, Brad, was exceptional. There are also great opportunities to see and learn more about First Nations culture..... and even (for the more adventurous) to sleep in a teepee!
We would recommend Cross River Cabins to anybody looking for an authentic 'back-woods' experience that can be enjoyed by anybody, whatever their level of fitness.
