“A Haven”

After driving nearly all day to reach the Liard springs, we arrived fifteen minutes before the park and springs closed, and hadn't been told that before paying. So we promptly decided to turn around, try to get lodgings at the inn across the way, and were scared away by the sketchiness not to mention the bad attitudes encountered and the "sorry we are full"...
Disappointed we consulted our maps and found Muncho Lake not too far away. We were exhausted, ready to sleep and frustrated with Canada in general. Arriving at the Northern Rockies Lodge we were very worried that they would be full as well, since we didn't make reservations. We walked in to pay for gas that was available and the gentleman at the counter was extremely nice and helpful. He helped us with the gas and gave us a cabin for my family of five. While a little small, it was perfect for the time being and the one night stay. The bathroom was really nice, updated, and the cabin had a little porch with these lights that attracted the birds. They were adorable! Sitting there on top of the lamps to warm up. For the price, it was a great stay. The breakfast the next morning was good, and the room and service great. I totally recommend the stay (we travelled through in August). If I am ever on the Al-can again I will stay here. It was a relaxing stay and we felt thoroughly rested after just the one night there. My favorite night of the whole journey!

“What a HUGE letdown.....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

After 20+ years of driving the Alaska Highway, I finally had the opportunity to stay here. Wow, what a letdown. Admittedly, I came with a pet, so that may skew the rooms, but why do I feel like I'm being punished for that? Base price $155, $10 for a child over 5 and $10 for the dog, so $165+ taxes, came to $184 with HST and RoomTax.

Anyhow, two towels, a tiny TV, slow internet, basement room (no log walls), linoleum floors, white walls, a small room, not to mention no coffee maker, no microwave, art on the walls (nice self promoting posters (cynically said)), cable TV wires handy loosely form the walls, a filthy bathroom fan and generic bed sheets. I even laid my laptop on the check-in counter and had to go to the front desk 2X to get the correct wi-fi password.

DO NOT STAY HERE, drive by or better plan a trip (or idle your car and sleep in it at night) at the very least you can spend way less else where and get much less service, but at least you expect that for the price.

I really don't like feeling like I've been ripped off, but this place has done that to me.

Room Tip: sleep in your car.

Urs Schildknecht, Manager at Northern Rockies Lodge, responded to this review
10 December 2011
Hi there,

Although it pains me to read your review, and I wish I had have been here to speak with you personally, I'd just like to respond with a few points.

After reading your email as well as your reviwe, it seems that you were made aware the fact that due to the remote nature of our Lodge, we do not get any sort of government subsidies and are required to pay market cost + carbon tax on every liter of fuel that we use to generate electricity.

At the current price, it costs between $350 and $400 a day to just in diesel to provide power to our state of the art generator facility (also a a very costworthy venture).

The cost of doing business in this location is much higher than most areas as we have little or no access to a daily supply chain of goods and services, and even providing the most basic of infrastructure comes at a very high cost.

We unfortunately have to lower people's expectations on a few points...one which you mentioned, and that is the internet service. We cannot provide stable high speed access, as there is no company that can provide it to us in this location. We do offer service that at times is fast, but at the slowest times, will still allow for web browsing, and I'm sorry we couldn't meet your expectation for high speed access.

The rooms which are allotted for pet owners, as you stated, have linoleum flooring...we believe this offers the best solution for housekeeping after a pet has been in a room. This also helps if we have clients with pet allergies.

These rooms also have great views and the sliding glass patio doors with walkout to the property are usually not a sore spot for most and provide convenient access for pet owners to take their animals outside.

The linens are on par with what you will find at any major establishment and are clean and comfortable and I'm sorry we couldn't please you with better linens. Our rooms are set up for 2 people, and should you have needed more towels you could have simply asked and we would have provided them (this is written in the booklet in your room). Hairdryers and alarm clocks are also provided upon request!

I have addressed the issue of the bathroom fan with our cleaning staff and I can assure you that this is being taken care.

We cannot provide coffee makers in the bedrooms as this will create too much strain on the electrical system, but we do offer coffee (and coffee to go) in our restaurant, and being a fussy coffee drinker myself...I can tell you that our coffee is quite good and many people compliment us on it :)

I could really go on but I think at this point in time all I can do is offer you my personal apology and let you know that all of the issues that you've brought to light here as well as the email you sent, which ARE addressable and realistic, will be addressed.

We strive to provide the best possible service and we have been doing so for over 30 years, even after all the neighbor lodges have closed. We are still here and can only be here by charging a realistic price which is the well within the average in this area.

We are lucky to have thousands of satisfied guests, many who return and do so regularly and I believe that although we have fallen below your expectations, it is impossible to meet the expectations of every single customer that we have...again I apologize for this.

Thank you for taking the time to communicate your concerns with us.

Service is on the ball. they speak many languages, and read emails 24-7.
now...
Keeping in mind that you are in the middle of the rockies and there is only campgrounds, this place is great. It's the only place between Fort.Nelson and Watson Lake that has hotel rooms, with a flushable toilet in each room. your not camping your in a hotel.
Things to know and respect.
The whole lodge runs on Diesel Generators. burning around 6000 litres of Fuel a month, so turn off the tv and your lights, don't burn the hot water.
The food comes by truck, from Alberta, thats why its not cheap. but I suggest to take one plate and share. the plates a huge.
The rooms a nice an cosy and warm. the beds are ok but I suggest to bring your own pillow.

But by far the best morning Coffee in the world. My suggestion take you coffee to the front porch, sit down and watch the sun rise or just look a what nature has to offer. nothing can beat that.

Room Tip: winter- call in advance. bring warm clothes if your plan to hike. arrive in day light summer- reser...

“Miserable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

This stay might have been more enjoyable if their cabins were still open, but we missed them by about a week. So we were forced to stay in the main lodge. They say they are pet friendly, but its more like pets accepted. Even though this was one of the most expensive stays on our ALCAN trip they gave us a crappy, little room in the basement. The rooms are TINY, and LOUD. You can hear everything outside your door. We stayed here because it was a good half way point and they were “pet friendly”. The only reason they deserve a two star review is because the property was stunning beautiful, and the restaurant was by far the best food we had on our trip. I think if the beach front cabins were still going the stay would have been much better. So if you have big dogs and have to stay in the main lodge, try at all cost to avoid the Northern Rockies Lodge.

Room Tip: Avoid the main lodge basement rooms.

“Northern Rockies Lodge - you betcha!!”

We travel the Alcan often and look forward to our stay at the Northern Rockies Lodge. Its located on Muncho Lake with the Rockies looking down at you. Urs and Marianna are great hosts. Their staff is friendly, helpful and efficient, the chef and resturant staff are great, and the food - well all I can say is that I look forward to the variety and the salad and soup is one of my favorites! The rooms are spacious European sparce and very clean and comfortable with crisp sheets and thick towels. The grounds are well kept and great for a walk along the lake and there's a sauna too! This mountain resort rivals many in the south. you may even stay a day or two longer just to enjoy the area or take a sightseeing or flyin fishing trip. After a long drive of beautiful scenery and dodging many animals, I am thankful that the hosts and staff of Northern Rockies Lodge are there to greet us at any time of the year. If you drive past you have missed a great stay!!!
