“Gross!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

We stayed at this place going west and were put into a cabin with our group. It was adequate and had kitchen facilities which would have been nice had there been food available. The water smells terrible! On our return we were put into a room attached to the main building and it was horrible. It was very tiny, smelled badly, had the windows open but no screens in an area of lots of mosquitos and had no handles to pull the windows closed. There were inadequate outlets in the room and one of those didn't even work. No air conditioning so room was stifling with windows closed (had to go outside and push them closed). While we had made a reservation months in advance we were put into the terrible room and others arriving at the same time without reservations were given far better accomodations. Because there is no one in the office at night, guests are encouraged to simply "take a room" when they arrive and then settle up in the morning. This seems very loose and potentially not very safe for others staying in that same room area. The restaurant is mediocre at best. The "stew" special was so salty it was inedible. Only one person was working in the restaurant/check in area and therefore service for both was poor both at night and in the morning. We would never stay here again, especially given that there are other nice lodges in the area.

Room Tip: DO NOT allow them to put you into the rooms attached to the main building. There are much better roo...

“Dishonest people!”

We were moving from the states to Alaska and ended up staying at the toad river lodge. When I went in to ask how much a room was for 2 adults 3 kids a 2 dogs they told me $79.00 plus $15 for the dogs. That seemed reasonable so we decided to check in only to be charge $150 for the one night!! I didn't notice this until after we had unloaded into our very small room. When I confronted them about the charges they finally fessed up and told me that it is $15 per dog AND they charged us $15 for our kids oh and the room was $89.00 instead of $79.00 plus the expensive tax. They were not upfront or honest about there prices and charges. The rooms are dinky and very dirty certainly NOT worth $150 a night. As if that isn't bad enough we ate at there little restaurant for dinner and ended up spending over $70 just for a few chicken nuggets, fry's and some sandwiches! This place is a total rip off, and the people who work here will be sure to take advantage of you. I know there aren't too many options in this area, but if you can at all avoid it DO NOT SATAY HERE!!!!

“pretty gross”

We stayed here on our way driving out of Alaska to the states. We had a cabin and it was REEAAALLLYYYY roughing it! very old accomidations, sheets im sure were slept on a few times before us, and most of all the water smells like rotten eggs!!!! No lie, its awful. If you must stay here (there is a lack of places to stay in this area) bring your own water - can't imagine having to brush my teeth in that water.
one plus - the lady running the lodge was super nice, and the food she cooked was good.

“A beautiful spot but very basic accom.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2009

Cabins are very basic and have a smell apparantly from the water that contains a lot of iron. However if you can put up with this then setting next to a lake is stunning. Saw both Moose and Beaver in lake. Site has petrol and good basic food in cafe.

“Gave my room away!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2008

I reserved a motel room at the Toad River Lodge with my credit card a week in advance. I showed up and the ladies puzzled over their ledger and finally told me, "Sorry, we gave your room away." I had to drive three hours to Fort Nelson to find another motel.

It would have been nice if they'd offered me free food or something, since I was standing in their restaurant, but no - just "we gave your room away," kthxbye.
