I stayed one night at the Coast Medicine Hat and can't recommend it. I'm a pretty loyal Coast traveller for short business trips but if youre looking for a room in Medicine Hat, the Lodge (while dated) is a much better hotel.
Front desk: friendly but incompetent. The front desk clerk told me to wait before calling for room service as she was too busy on the phone with a reservation to transfer my call to room service unless I gave her fifteen minutes as 'this was all new to her'.
Room: the front desk clerk informed me that I was given an unsolicited 'complimentary upgrade' to a room filled with so much gaudy African decor that there was no place for me to set up my laptop. Literally: no room to set it down. It's tiny! I travel for work and had to work at my computer cross legged on a bed with crappy lighting. Worse, there was a constant loud squealing noise coming from the fan inside the air unit in the room that didn't stop even when it was shut right off. Kept me up all night- unfortunately it didn't start until after 10pm, too late to pack everything up and move rooms.
Food: there's no restaurant per se, however they have 'room service' out of the onsite pub and advertise it as an amenity. When I called to place an order, the pub waitress asked me if I , like, wanted them to, like, bring it to my room or something? Ummmmmm, that's sort of what 'room service' is........
There weren't any blackout shades on the windows, just sheers and a pair of semi- opaque tab curtains. Between the light and the squealing fan, you'll need an eye mask and some earplugs.

We were told this was a really great place to stay, totally not true. The room we were given first was a non smoking room that smelled of smoke. There was hair in the bathtub as well as on the toilet seat, YUCK! We talked with the front desk, they were very kind & apologetic, telling us they would do what they could considering they didn't have any housekeeping on at this time (4pm). So we went out for a bit & once we arrived back found nothing in our room, they had moved us to a new room without talking with us, which would've been fine had the room been any better. Our new room was also no smoking, however there were quite a few cigarette burns on the floor which accompanied the smell. This was not the only issue, the floor was stained as this is an animal friendly place but the stains were numerous and disgusting, and being an animal lover like I am I can recognize the smell of urine and it was almost overwhelming. The bathtub also once again had previous guest hairs, I can only imagine what some of the other rooms must look like considering this was our improvement. I would never stay again, even if I was offered a free stay. I was totally disgusted.

After unsuccessfully looking all over the "Hat" for rooms we stumbled upon the Coast Hotel. The exterior showed the hotel to be built in the 80s, the lobby was for very nice, and one could tell by the hallway stucco it was built in the 80s as well.
Admittedly, I'm a clean freak when it comes to Hotels and also quite fussy typically only staying in newer establishments.... so I was apprehensive staying here.

Backing up a bit, all the other Hotel's in this class were booked up so we had no choice but to stay here. This particular place had two rooms left when we arrived. Due to the remaining rooms and the size of our family we were required to get two rooms. The front desk person was kind enough to give us a super deal on both rooms. He didn't have to do this since someone else was standing in line hoping to get the last room.

Walking through the door into the rooms I was taken off guard as to how finely decorated and furnished the rooms were. The rooms have been recently re-furbished. The front door entrance and bathroom are decorated with tiling, the walls painted to modern colours, and the furniture appeared to be something found in a higher end place. I also have to add that the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in a Hotel.
The rooms were also very clean. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the Coast Inn.
On our travels through Medicine Hat, we will definitely stay here again and highly recommend it as a very nice place to stay.

Cindi, Henny and the rest of the staff at the Coast Hotel Medicine Hat are by far and away one of the most helpful groups of people we have ever dealt with in the hotel industry. When we come with our groups of 40-50 people they are always there to look after our every need.
