“poor customer service”

The worst customer service I have ever received in a motel. My husband & I stayed here during the Christmas holidays. We did realize when we booked, that the motel staff had Christmas off, so we would be on our own for a day & a half. We didn't realize that a continental breakfast was usually included in the price we paid, until we checked in at the desk. They wouldn't give us any kind of discount, okay fine, I could live with that. The problem was, they didn't leave us any extra toilet paper in our room and we ran out the first evening we were there. We had to go out and buy our own. When the staff returned the next day I mentioned this to the front desk agent. She wouldn't even apologize for the mistake or discuss the situation with me, just wanted me to pay and leave. Otherwise, the room we had was clean and quiet.

“Do they rent by the hour?”

This property regularly offers low rates on a number of consolidator websites like expedia, but don't be fooled by the good prices into thinking that you're getting a bargain; this Econo Lodge probably has the grossest, smelliest hotel rooms in Alberta.

Rooms are dark and dirty, and my "non-smoking" room reeked of cigarette smoke and stale ashes. Maybe I was given the same room as the previous poster. In any case, it also smelled mouldy and grungy, and the ratty drapes and dingy carpet smelled like they could have used a good shot of febreeze.

Linen service appeared to be sporadic, and I slept on top of the cover.

The check-in clerk was surly and indifferent; I'd be that he was just tired of fielding complaints from angry patrons.

I'm sure I would have had a better night's sleep on a park bench. For masochists and/or the desperate only.

  • Liked — nothing!
  • Disliked — appearance; cleanliness
  • Tips/Secrets — spend the extra buck and get a room that doesn't smell like a mouldy old ashtray!

“How on Earth did this place get such a high ranking?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2006

Although it wasn't our first choice (other hotels were fully booked) we stayed at the Econolodge largely based on the ranking it received on TripAdvisor as well as the fact that in the photo it appears to be a fairly new facility. We booked a non-smoking room. Even though the sign on the door indicated that the room was designated a non-smoking room, the room had clearly been used by smokers on many occasions. The smell was extrememly strong and the carpets and furniture were damaged by cigarettes. The room was not clean. The carpets hadn't been properly vacuumed. Thankfully, the sheets and towels were clean, and the air-conditioner was working, so we were able to get some sleep. The night we were there, we had to close the window, because the noise from the outside was loud. The breakfast offering was about the worst we have ever had at any Motel/Hotel offering free continental. This is not a newer facility. Like many on Mayor MacGrath, it is an older facility that has been updated at some point. In spite of the upgrade it is showing its age. If I ever returned to the area, I would try to stay at the Ramada - especially with kids, or the Holiday Inn or the Comfort Inn. Based on our expereince, we would not recommend the Econo Lodge.

“Nice, clean place”

The reservation got messed up and our family of 4 was offered a room with one queen-sized bed! They only had one roll-away bed, which my small children had to share, but they were tired and didn't seem to mind. Other than the problem with the reservation, the stay was fine. The breakfast was awesome, we had the best juice, bagels and muffins. Delicious!

“Great Value”

We have stayed at the Econolodge too many times to count in the past year. We find it to be very comfortable wtih a wide range of room choices. Sometimes we get a jacuzzi suite, sometimes a kitchenette or suite, sometimes a large room. We have found them all to be very comfortable and spaciousenough for the two of us. One thing I would love at any hotel is a comfortable chair. All the rooms have been clean and had a microwave, fridge and coffee maker. Continental breakfast is very simple - donuts, muffins, juice, coffee, tea. For the price we paid it was excellent value and some of the staff were outstanding.
